Tasks of the Design Phase
In this phase, the business process expert applies the defined needs and requirements to planning the to-be processes, based on solutions that have been collected. According to this plan, the business process expert then designs the process flow, and models the process and all of its steps.
This phase includes the following tasks:
- Evaluate potential solutions to meet identified needs
Using SAP Business Solution Maps of SAP Solution Composer, and ARIS for SAP NetWeaver, the business process expert can identify existing solutions and thereby map out potential configurations of the proposed process. - Design the business process
Based on the information gathered, the business process expert uses ARIS, Guided Procedures, and Solution Manager to design the process and service orchestration, re-using existing SAP models from ARIS, for specifications and documentation. In addition, the business process expert uses MDM and BI systems to define a master data strategy and plan for data warehousing. - Model the business process and all of its steps
The business process expert models the guided procedures using SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer in conjunction with Guided Procedures, and models each step of the process in Visual Composer. The result is a clearly defined process model that includes workflow, user interface, and content for each step of the process.
Tools for Design Phase
Business process experts can use the following tools during the design phase:
- Solution Composer
Download the Solution Composer to view, customize, or create your own business maps. - Enterprise Services Workplace
- BI analysis process designer
For information on BI, see Business Intelligence. - Guided Procedures
For documents related to Guided Procedures, see SAP Guided Procedures. - Visual Composer
- SAP Enterprise Modeling by IDS Scheer

Documentation for the Design Phase
For each task in the design phase, the following documentation is helpful.
Task: Evaluate Potential Solutions
- Enterprise Data Warehousing
Turn raw data into actionable intelligence and get process-centric data. - Business Process Management -> Usage and Adaptation of Predefined Content
Use reference models. - Master Data Management
Plan for centralized maintenance and storage of master data, and distribution to client systems from a centralized location. Import/export product data, and plan for central content management.
Task: Design business process
- Business Planning and Analytical Services -> Business Planning
Build integrated analytical applications that contain planning and analytical functions. - Enabling Enterprise Services
Develop services on the basis of Web service standards. Business Process Management -> Usage and Adaptation of Predefined Content
Use and integrate reference models.
Task: Model the business process and steps
- Business Process Management -> Process Automation
Model and configure embedded (integral to SAP applications) processes and unbound (cross-application or cross-component) processes, as needed. - Developing, Configuring and Adapting Applications -> Creating Composite Applications
Create processes in SAP Guided Procedures. - Developing, Configuring and Adapting Applications -> Creating Composite Applications -> Modeling a Composite Application
Model the callable objects used for the procedure steps.
