SAP Process Integration (SAP PI). a capability of SAP NetWeaverTM, is SAP's platform for process integration based on the exchange of XML messages. SAP PI 3.0 offers a new PI Adapter Framework (AF) architecture which provides comprehensive development tools for third party software companies to proficiently perform PI adapter implementations. The certification testing procedure has been enhanced with SAP PI 7.0; the complete API has been enhanced and changed with SAP PI 7.1.
The SAP Integration and Certification Centers provide certification opportunities for third-party adapters for the P
I Adapter Framework (NW-XI-AF). These adapters must be implemented as resource adapters of the Java Connector Architecture (JCA) 1.0 and enable the integration engine to talk to different application components or industry standards. Within SAP PI, it is important that the adapters are ‘lightweight' in case the integration directory must be used to keep track of required services and mappings. To pass integration certification testing PI adapters are also required to build the connection directly to other applications or technical systems and must be deployed to SAP PI.
Independent Software Vendors can use the SAP Partner Connectivity Kit (PCK), available through any SAP sales office, as their platform to develop their PI adapters.
The SAP Integration and Certification Center (SAP ICC) highly recommends that ISVs and partners, who are interested in certifying an integration of their product with SAP solutions, begin with our page Getting Started with Integration and Certification that explains the SAP ICC services and describes the process how to obtain them. This page helps you select the correct integration scenario and contains technical information, streaming media presentations, step-by-step guides, and much more.

SAP PI 7.1
A new version of NW-XI-AF is available in this release. Certificates for earlier releases are no longer valid. SAP offers recertification.
Please find further technical information regarding the new APIs here:
- Adapters certified for SAP PI 7.1 also have to prove the support of multi-cluster PI environments (see below in the PI 7.0 section).
SAP PI 7.0
This release is compatible with SAP XI (Exchange Infrastructure ) 3.0 However, the certification testing procedure has been enhanced significantly to also test the adapter in a multi-cluster environment on physically different machines. This is to ensure a better quality of the certified adapters in the customers environment, where usually also the PI is running in a multi-cluster mode.
A new testplan for SAP PI 7.0 is available at the ICC. Re-Certification is not required, but strongly recommended.
Further details regarding the architectural principles of cluster enablement with respect to PI adapters can be found in an attachment of SAP note 766332 or requested from the ICC.

Test System Recommendation from ICC
SAP RAC Service:
The quickest way to gain access to an SAP system suitable for integration testing is via the SAP Remote Access and Connectivity Service (SAP RAC), which provides access to shared and exclusive-use hosted test systems.
Description about available test system options:
Read SAP ICC consultant Martin Vierling's blog about Integrating to SAP Solutions - Test System Opportunities for independent Software Vendors, where you can find the options of hosted SAP Test Systems and recommendations, if the hosted test system option is suitable for your certification.
Developing PI Adapters requires the Partner Connectivity Kit PCK, which can be obtained from your local SAP sales office.
