Component Frameworks

Component Framework Standards specify technical infrastructure that makes it possible to assemble enterprise applications from components. Standardization of component frameworks promotes the interoperability required in order to combine modules developed by different organizations. The technical layer of SAP's Business Process Platform supports a number of component framework standards.

The component framework category of standards includes, for example, the Web Services Remote Portlet (WSRP) specification, which makes it possible to compose a portal page from distributed "portlet" components, and J2EE specifications that promote the construction of modular, distributed systems.

The OSGi standards for plug-in components that enable extensions to Eclipse, and standards that traditionally have been called "middleware" standards, generally fall into this category as well. Component framework standards also include newer specifications such as Service Data Objects (SDO) and Service Component Architecture (SCA), which are specified by an alliance between industry leaders in which SAP is an active participant.
