Thanks suman, i went thru the doc. So thru the MCH1 table view I will be to load the batch number for a given material. But then how is material characterstic values will be linked to the sales order item? especially when the material char has multiple values?

use 2LIS_11_VAITM as datasource, VBPS as object table. Class type 300.
Then you have your characteristics directly on the sales order item.
Thanks 2xu, but then most of our SD reports are based on characterstics, so this way, will I have to enhance all the SD item data sources of shipping, delivery, billing?

You don't have to enhance the 2LIS datasources themselves. In CTBW you generate a new datasource, the same as for master data. It will be named 1CL_OLIS001 or something.
If you heavily rely on characteristics from the variant configurator/classification, I'd extract them like that.
You could try to enhance the 2LIS extractors themselves, but this means user exits etc.
In CTBW it's merely a question of generating the DS, selecting fields and that's it.

I'd only generate datasources in BW for the necessary 2LIS-extractors. Not per se all SD-extractors.
If you only have characteristics on sales items, but not on deliveries, the 2LIS_11_VAITM is enough.
So you'll have to check your requirements.
But if all of the mentioned objects have characteristics, then yes, that's the way to go.

I added 7 characteristics in which 4 are CHAR typ and 3 are KYG type when i am activating the datasource i am getting an error " the Extract structure is not permitted " .Pls help me its bit urgent.
