Upgrade straight from 4.7 to EHP5

Hi,

We are planning to do a technical upgrade from 4.7 to EHP5. We are planning to do it 4.7 to ECC 6 then ECC 6 to EHP5? Can it be one-step instead of 2-steps? What are the prerequisites if we do this one-step? Can you please guide me on how this can be done? Also, how long usually does it take to complete

an upgrade from 4.7 to EHP5?

Many thanks.

You can directly upgrade from SAP R/3 4.7 to ERP 6.0 EHP5 . But please ensure the database version and the operating system version supports ERP 6.0 EHP5.

Check the product availability matrix under http://service.sap.com/pam

Please download the upgrade guide from the SAP service marketplace .

    Regards

    Ratnajit

      Hi Ratnajit,

We will have Windows 2008 and MS SQL 2008.

Would you know how long usually will this activity take? How many months?

Also, do we just use the:

Mass shipment release: SAP ERP 6.0 including SAP enhancement package 5 for
      technical usage "Central Applications"

      for this technical upgrade?

      Many thanks.

      Hi Ratnajit,

We need to do the upgrade first of our OS and DB in 4.7 before we execute the EHP5 upgrade, right? Also, do you have any additional information as to what else we need to do with our 4.7 before we do the EHP5 like support packs that needs to be applied, SAP notes, patches, etc?

      Appreciate your help on this.

      Many thanks in advance.

      Regards,

      Grace

        Follow the steps as below.

        1. Upgrade from SAP R/3 4.7 to ERP 6.0 EHP5 ( assuming your system is running on Windows 2003 server and SQL Server 2005 on 64 bit platform)

        2. Then prepare the system for unicode conversion. Perform the export of the system using SAPINST and import it into the Windows 2008 server and SQL server 2008.

Your system should now be Unicode enabled running SAP ERP 6.0 EHP5 on SQL server 2008 and Windows server 2008 OS.

        Regards

        Ratnajit

          Hi Ratnajit,

Sorry for my last reply, I got it all mixed-up so I deleted it.

          Thanks for all your assistance.

          Hi Ratnajit,

Would you know the difference between SAP Basis 7.0 and SAP Basis 702? As mentioned, we will upgrade from SAP 4.7 to SAP ECC6 EhP5 and we are currently using EMC Documentum 6.5 SP2 which uses SAP Basis 7.0. Would there be any possible issues/problems that we may encounter because EMC stated that they have not officially certified SAP Basis 702 for Documentum.

Any information that we may get from this will be highly appreciated. We cannot decide whether we will just upgrade to SAP ECC 6 or do a one-step upgrade to SAP ECC 6 EhP 5 with this concern pending.

          Many thanks again in advance.

      Hi Ratnajit,

I just learned that EhP6 has been released already. If so, is it also possible to upgrade straight from 4.7 to EhP6? Any advice which to implement, EhP5 or EhP6?

      Thanks in advance.

      Grace

It will not be possible to upgrade directly from R/3 4.7 to ERP 6.0 EHP6 as there is no single Windows server operating system version on which both the versions 4.7 and EHP 6 can operate. SAP R/3 4.7 can run latest on Windows Server 2005 whereas ERP 6.0 EHP6 can operate only on Windows server 2008.

        3. Using the SUM tool upgrade from ERP 6.0 EHP5 to ERP 6.0 EHP6.

        Regards

        Ratnajit

    Hello,

additional information: is your 4.7 system non-unicode? Please refer to note #928729 in case you need to perform an unicode conversion together with the upgrade:

    #928729:  Combined Upgrade & Unicode Conversion (CU&UC)

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Hi,

In case of upgrade to ECC Ehp6.

Note "1476928 - System copy of SAP systems on Windows 2008 (R2): SQL Server" says:

"For SAP releases based on Web AS 6.40 SR1 and lower, you must start the upgrade immediately after the system migration. During the upgrade you must not use the system productively until you reach the end of the upgrade downtime. During the upgrade of these SAP releases, errors might occur in the DB-specific monitoring tools such as transactions DB02, ST04, DB12 and DB13 etc. These releases are not supported on SQL Server 2008 or higher, and you can ignore such errors during the upgrade."

I understand that there is possible to perform system copy of your 4.7 to Windows 2008 ( normal or R2 ) and then, perform the upgrade  to a ECC EHP6 ( and unicode conversion too, as Note 928729:  Combined Upgrade & Unicode Conversion (CU&UC) says ).

the only problem is that you cannot use your system as a productive system until you have not finished the downtime.

My question is about if the possibility of minimize productive downtime with any other combination of landscape. Would you think is it possible, for example, perform the upgrade in source system ( 4.7 on Windows 2003 and SQL 2005 ), perform the system copy/migration to windows 2008 - SQL 2008 and then execute the unicode conversion?

In this case, the only phase out-of-support would be upgrade downtime phase, but I think It can be better than other possibilities.

    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.
