The trick is to double click on the "document" number (column on the right), not the Purchase order no. column on the left.
Then the sales order document is copied as document number in VA03.

Are you sure you are double-clicking on the blue column?
Works here 
Maybe there is an OSS note, but Sales Matchcode are such a basic system function I doubt it.
What is your version level?

In the result, the order number column is not blue. I think that it is the problem. You are right.
Now, I'm looking for why order number (VBELN), is not blue in VMVA matchcode. (In VMVAA matchcode, the order number column is blue).
