This Wednesday, December 7, starting at 7AM Pacific / 10AM Eastern / 4PM CET, SAP Mentor Dick Hirsch (@rhirsch) of Atos and SAP’s Sven Denecken (@SDenecken) are holding an open twitter chat about SAP’s strategy for cloud offerings. Anyone is invited to join into the discussion and lob some good questions at either Dick or Sven via twitter. Look for the tag: #SAPchat.

As described in Dick Hirsch’s blog, this conversation has been planned since Sapphire Madrid in October. As many of you know, over last weekend, SAP and SuccessFactors announced an agreement whereby SAP will acquire SuccessFactors. You can also watch a video of SAP’s co-CEO Jim Snabe discussing the news on CNBC.

The press release linked above pretty much says all we SAP employees involved in the SAPChat can say right now about SAP-SuccessFactors future. SAP expects the transaction to be completed in Q1 2012. Until then, it’s not really appropriate for SAP employees to be commenting on the acquisition. The reason for it is simple: until the transaction is closed, both SAP and SuccessFactors need to operate as independent companies. We want to tell you this upfront so that you can understand why we will not be able to answer questions on this topic.

ByDesign Team Forming for InnoJam SAP TechEd Madrid

Once again we are assembling a team to wield SAP Business ByDesign to compete in InnoJam at SAP TechEd Madrid.

What is InnoJam?

InnoJam is a 30 hour extreme programming event during the preconference period at SAP TechEd / SapphireNow in Madrid. Contestants propose business scenarios related the theme, sustainability, and then organize teams that then build prototype solutions to address their chosen scenarios leveraging SAP technology.

At SAP TechEd Las Vegas, the ByDesign team came From SAP TechEd Las Vegas InnoJam – Inside the Gamification of ByDesign, developing an application for My #InnoJam for #SAPTECHED Suggestion: Adding Gamification to SAP Business #ByDesign.

SAP Mentor Andreas Eissmann will be leading the team, and has proposed creating The ultimate personal CO2 emission reduction challenge, leveraging the gamification engine that was built for SAP TechEd Las Vegas. Incidentally, Andreas Eissmann is one of the most prolific developers of apps for ByDesign on the SAP Store, so I’m very excited to have him leading the team.

One of the things I’ve been working on lately has been putting together a webinar talking about security and reliability in cloud computing, especially if you are depending on some other vendors’ software as a service (SaaS). On the surface, this seems to be a reasonable question, since you are putting your – and often your customers’ – data in the hands of some third party provider.

Funny thing is, except for the largest companies, most cloud providers are able to put together a data center and cloud service with a security design that rivals that of the largest companies. That doesn’t mean that you should trust implicitly in these providers. Nothing is perfect. Take, for example, the recent news of the hacker breach of Dutch Certificate Authority DigiNotar affecting Iranian users of GMail, and the breach of RSA’s tokens – two companies in the business of providing services for cyber security.

I’ve put together a couple of heavy hitters in this upcoming webinar about cloud security that can help you learn what to be concerned about when you turn your data over to a SaaS provider, and what SaaS providers are doing to help meet these concern:

Kamesh Pemmaraju, Director of Cloud Research at The SandHill Group who will discuss security concerns of his research clients (see his other recent webinars on the topic) and will interview

From SAP TechEd Las Vegas InnoJam Inside the Gamification of ByDesign

At the InnoJam event that kicked off SAP TechEd Las Vegas, I was part of a team of developers that built a “gamification” app that integrates with the business processes within SAP Business ByDesign. Our group chose a scenario similar to My #InnoJam for #SAPTECHED Suggestion: Adding Gamification to SAP Business #ByDesign.

Our team won 3^rd place - a respectable showing. We did well because we chose a scenario that had broad relevance (incenting sales reps to enter opportunities instead of just orders), and we showed that it was indeed possible to retrofit gamification features into existing business processes. What kept us from wining first place was the fact that we did not have the flashiest user interface, and that we included a “leader board” feature, which judge Jane McGonigal says appeals more to men than to women.

To develop our app, we used the SAP Business ByDesign Studio which allows us to author new business objects and user interfaces directly into a ByDesign development tenant, as well as extend business objects that are native to the ByDesign application itself. In theory, if completed, this app could go through the process to eventually be placed on the SAP Store, and be available for download and purchase by ByDesign customers.

Despite the fact that we were working with only the second release of the tooling, we found the ByDesign tooling to be initially very productive. A couple of guys who never touched the tool before were able to create an app in just a couple of hours, and an iPad app in even less time. Debugging turned out to be a pain, however, as the tool still has “wet spots” in this area. This is one reason why SAP is working closely with a small number of partners in a limited release program.

The app consists of a number of business objects related to gamfiication itself: games, contests, rewards, and associated screens for viewing and operating on these business objects with either a Microsoft Silverlight client, or in a mobile device application. In addition, the app extends some ByDesign native business objects such as User to attribute user specific features such as personal score and ranking; and user exit functions of business process objects such as SalesOpportunity and SalesOrder to achieve business process integration.

I need to give some credit for some important pre-work done by student intern, Pit Humke, who is working in SAP’s ByDesign development team. Upon reading my suggestion for using ByDesign at InnoJam, Pit set out to make sure the tool and APIs would be ready for this kind of scenario. His research helped determine that it would be more productive for us to create a rudimentary gamification engine directly into ByDesign as opposed to integrating one of the platforms suggested by InnoJam. In fact, our team chose to use the test gamification engine created by Pit as our base so that we could focus on integrating into the business process.

Our vision was considerably larger than the actual development we were able to complete. Our idea was to have a full gamification engine built into the ByDesign platform. From there, business processes would be integrated and a number of gamification scenarios enabled for each. Multiple “contests” could be run at once, selected by the gamification administrator.

Ideally there would be a bit of analytics involved. The administrator could select the contests they want to run. The system would then start measuring the KPIs the contests are meant to affect and set a baseline before the contest is run. Then as the contest runs and is completed, the administrator would have reports available that show the impact of the game on users behavior in the system. There would be some customization available around scoring rules, but this would have to be well designed so that the administrator didn’t need to be a programmer.

There are two features we didn’t get to mock up that I would have liked to have achieved. First is an ability to achieve real world rewards: not a materialistic prize, but a chance to direct charitable donations to a school of your choice, or somewhere such as Kiva. Second, I would have preferred if we had thought of a contest that was more “collaborative” in nature. Instead of putting a spotlight on individual performance and ranking it, it would reward team performance. But we should have chosen a different business problem from the scenario we implemented: incenting sales reps to record sales opportunities into the system.

Lastly, another interesting learning is in cultural & legal differences around the world. Where in the US, its acceptable, and even motivating to employees to be measured specifically on performance, European concerns for privacy require opt-in with a pseudonym.

Our team had a great time and we learned a lot at InnoJam Las Vegas. I'd like to thank our technical help: Werner Wolf and Matthias de la Roche, who made it possible for us to finish our demo on time with their pointers and instruction.

Five Humanly Possible Cloud Agendas for #SAPTechEd Las Vegas Sessions

The hard part of being just human is that you can be in only one place at a time. And you feel this limitation accutely at SAP TechEd, where there are always so many great sessions to go see.

A query on the TechEd Las Vegas session database for topics related to the cloud brings up more than 100 different sessions. My guess is that you have to clone yourself about 6 times to be able to make them all simultaneously. If you are advanced with your virtualization skills, maybe you can do this!

If you haven't filled your TechEd dance card yet, then here are some last minute suggestions for can’t-miss sessions to learn about cloud strategy for SAP operations, and SAP offerings served via the cloud.

My #InnoJam for #SAPTECHED Suggestion: Adding Gamification to SAP Business #ByDesign

SAP Business ByDesign is a full featured ERP software as a service (SaaS) solution built for small and midsize companies. It provides end to end integrated business processes, unified data storage, and a well designed user experience built for the way people work.

While it can make your job a lot easier, maybe there’s a way we can make the ByDesign experience more fun and exciting.

Enter gamification, the theme of this year’s InnoJam competition. Long story short, gamification adds game dynamics and features to applications in order to encourage user behaviors. Examples you may be familiar with are awarding points on SDN for blogging or answering forum questions, and earning badges for “mayor” by checking in via social media at your favorite restaurant. InnoJam participants have been asked to submit their ideas for business scenarios for gamification in advance of the competition via idea place.

This led me to consider how ByDesign might benefit from gamification features. In theory, any business process that has user behaviors that need to beincentivized could benefit from such an approach. Obvious examples include encouraging sales reps to enter lead and prospect data into systems early in a sales cycle, or as submitted by Brian O’Neill, encouraging documentation by technicians.

While the sky is the limit in terms of ideas, certain business processes and APIs for SAP Business ByDesign will be easier to implement gamification than others in the current release.

I prefer to think about this in terms of adding a broad capability to ByDesign for allowing customers to define games for a number of behaviors they want to incent. To that end, I’m proposing we create a gamification add-on application for ByDesign. You could imagine this could be posted for sale on the SAP Store if someone were to build it out completely.

So first we have to determine whether we can integrate one of the gamification tools suggested by InnoJam, such as the cloud based Bunchball - Nitro. Can we handle this as simply as a mashup? Are there other considerations we need to worry about, such as not sending personal data to another cloud service? If we determine its not workable, then we will build a native gamification engine directly into the ByD app. This is important for allowing us to begin determining the data model of the application. How much can we depend upon a web service, and what do we keep locally, as well as extend from native ByDesign business objects(such as personnel data).

The application would have three major modes:

1) A games page for all users to see the status of games running

2) Definition and administration of games

3) Integrated gameification of the standard business process screens

Modes one and two would exist within a gamification work center and associated views in ByDesign. The following screenshot illustrates this anatomy of what a work center is like:

And below is an example of adding gameification features directly into a business process screen:

Now a key element of administering these contests is tracking overall improvement of the behavior we are trying to incentivize. So we will need a means of tracking and measuring a baseline behavior, and then any improvement as a result of running the game. Maybe this is pie in the sky hoping?

And then to make the contest real, there should be an interface for exchanging points and badges for real world rewards. This could be something like directing donations to a charity or local school of your choice in the employees name, or even cash rewards – interfacing with accounting / payroll functionality.

OK, so maybe the wish list is way longer than the number of hours we have to program, but if we could demonstrate:

Define a game -> run a game in a business process -> view business improvement and game scoring -> cash in rewards, all running in a ByD system, I think we got a winning InnoJam entry.

Oh ya, and don’t worry. There are tons of analytics available, and the tooling makes it easy to create a mobile app version. So we’ll have our gratuitous sexy iPad app that integrates with our cloud solution to show.

I’m very excited about this year’s InnoJam. The organizers have been able to arrange an interesting set of new and exciting tools and apps for us to work with. During last year’s session, River’s cloud based deployment and rapid development paradigm performed extremely well in multiple projects.

The SAP Business ByDesign Toolset

This year, among the tools we get to work with is the SAP Business ByDesign platform as a service (PaaS) offering, known as the SAP Business ByDesign Studio. The Studio is similar to River in that its fast to setup and deploy, and enables rapid development of cloud applications with fairly minimal coding.

But that’s where the similarity ends.

ByDesign Studio is designed for creating cloud apps that add onto SAP Business ByDesign, the ERP software as a service (SaaS) solution, as well as enable one-off customization of a customer’s tenant. It’s a full PaaS solution that handles development, deployment, sales, and ongoing maintenance and compatibility.

Some of the things we will be using the ByDesign Studio at InnoJam for include:

Defining business objects, including extending core objects from the ByDesign application
Scripting business logic in business object event handler functions
UI development for web access and mobile devices (supports iOS, BlackBerry, and Windows 7 Mobile – basically we’ll use iPad for InnoJam purposes)
Integrating into business processes within the ByDesign app
Defining custom analytics and reporting
Defining or consuming Web services
Inserting configuration of our app into the core ByDesign configuration process

Why you should consider the ByDesign Studio

In a nutshell, the ByDesign Studio gives you a rapid development, cloud based environment, and simplified integration into a cloud-based ERP solution. So you can get started quickly, and see results soon – fast enough for an overnight programming competition. And, you get the API of a full ERP solution to develop against.

Finally, we are blessed to have technical assistance from a couple of the instructors of the ByDesign Studio hands on sessions here at TechEd. So, you can’t lose. You’ll learn what it takes to build a ByDesign app on the SAP Store, and you got a robust toolset to use for trying to win InnoJam.

I thought about calling this blog, “the Cobblers Kids Get Their Own Shoes”.

I’ve always been amazed at the lack of IT maturity within the core business of many IT consultancies. While I can’t speak for the largest SI’s, my experience with several moderate sized IT services firms shows they lack the same kind of visibility, automation, and integration of core business operations as many of the small and midsize companies they service.

IT services firms flock to SAP Business ByDesign

So I suppose it should be surprising that when SAP rolled out a special focus on professional services firms or SAP Business ByDesign, some of our most common customers are in fact SAP Partners. In many cases, these are SAP Partners that specialize in reselling and implementing SAP Business ByDesign.

Now, while SAP Business ByDesign is NOT ONLY for professional services companies, there are features within the on demand application that they find especially enticing:

Marketing, sales, and account management functionality that’s geared towards client acquisition, proposals, and winning projects.
Powerful project management for managing people, scheduling, expenses, and billing.
Financial management accounting and cash flow management to improve visibility and liquidity in operations.
HR processes integrated with projects for scheduling employees and working with external contract resources, including time keeping.

What Do You Demand in Your On Demand Community?

Today is the first day of a brand new community on the SAP Community Network – the SAP ByDesign Community. While its initially focusing on topics related to SAP Business ByDesign, I expect this community to rapidly expand to cover topics related to all the On Demand, SaaS, PaaS, and cloud solutions and technologies offered by SAP. While SAP has positioned certain offerings for different segments of its customer market, those of us who work with these kinds of solutions cross between customer segments. Our common interest is in cloud based offerings, and its this common interest that is the basis of our new community.

Cloud computing is hitting mainstream in the SAP customer base. One way you can tell is even old guard SAP basis guys are talking about how to run R/3 systems in private clouds, and there are groups of non traditional SAP customers are subscribing to SAP products such as SAP BusinessObjects BI On Demand, SAP StreamWork, and SAP Business ByDesign.

SAP customers are looking for IT execs, enterprise architects and IT practitioners with expertise in these solutions and how to relate them back to their existing SAP and non SAP investments. And, many traditional line of business executives are taking IT into their own hands and buying their own solutions since cloud solutions are available to anyone with a credit card.

As I look over how the topic of cloud has expanded in the world of SAP customers, it’s interesting to note what’s changed and what remains the same. Here are my thoughts about what’s changed:

Far fewer IT technicians are required due to automation, whether within the data center or in an outsourced solution
Opportunity for business-IT alignment is better since business is often in the driver’s seat, or at least applications can be discussed as a business service
Usability of software has gone from lip service to a most important buying criteria
Technical implementation times have decreased substantially

What’s even more interesting are the kinds of issues that are staying the same:

The more complicated part of adopting enterprise systems remains change management of the workers, not the software
Traditional IT outsourcing moves the “inflexible technology” problem, but does not eliminate it – and the oursourced service provider has even less incentive to change operations than traditional IT
Data quality, master data management, and data integration are issues that still need to be dealt with, usually after solving the more immediate business pain
Once core business processes are well managed, customers are looking for capacity for customization and agile adaption to unique needs
Governance of user access, especially for non centralized systems, or when service purchasers leave a company

My reasons for pointing out the above aren’t to start naming solutions, but to jog a discussion of the kinds of people who make up an “On Demand” practitioners community within the broader universe of SAP professionals. The kinds of people I’m running into include:

CIOs with much smaller IT staffs
CFOs that do IT (in smaller companies)
Enterprise architects that specialize in cloud strategy
Enterprise architects specializing in business network partner integration
Business analysts / business process experts within a regular business departments – not IT departments - responsible for a cloud SaaS solutions
Consultants that specialize in business service solutions

The kind of discussions around cloud / On Demand / SaaS discussion are radically different. Here we have business folk that have grown up with technology and are generally savvy about its use. And you have IT personnel that have a much higher degree of service orientation to the business since they’re basically considering buying a business service as opposed to doing a technical implementation.

Now the description above sounds like a tech heavy community still. In fact, I see two distinct “lobes” of this community – one that is more business operations focused, and would certainly involve anyone who cares about best practices for a business process, or end-to-end corporate visibility. There’s still a strong, but far less labor-intensive technical component as architectural questions, enterprise information considerations, and support for custom needs still remain. However all of this is one community because cloud-based / on demand computing is much closer to the stated goal of SAP’s BPX Community – to bridge the gap between business and IT.

I’m very excited about this new tribe in the nation of SCN communities. I look forward to interacting with all of you who chose to participate virtually and in person at future SAP community events.

Most of the customer stories I’ve shared and documented over the past couple of years leveraged agile development techniques as part of their BPM methodology. Done correctly, agile techniques are key to managing customer expectations, involving the customer in the delivery of the solution, and delivering expected value in the expected timeframe.
