The UN/CEFACT CCTS is a very promising methodology for describing business data on semantic level. A common understanding on semantic level is highly required for leveraging interoperatbility between business application and business partners. The UN/CEFACT CCTS V2.01 is the first released standard for reaching this goal. It got a wide popularity in the area of e-business standardization. Many standards organizations, such as UN/CEFACT, OAGi, ACORD, CIDX, UBL, B2MML and ANSI ASC X12 are implementing CCTS V2.01. Furthermore, SAP has recognized the advantages of UN/CEFACT CCTS standard. Therefore, the new primary and reusable SAP GDTs (Global Data Types) for business information in SAP NetWeaver™ are based on the CCTS approach. The CCTS V2.01 was released in November 2003. Since since time, the users got a lot of experience in using the CCTS approach. The CCTS group got a high number of comments, especially for improving CCTS. Especially this number of comments is an indication that there is a growing user community of CCTS.

All this experience has a significant impact to the new CCTS V3.0, which will become an international by Q2/Q3 of 2008. The CCTS V3.0 is developed by UN/CEFACT TMG (Technique and Methodology Group). The TMG had a face-to-face meeting in Zurich from Dec. 10th - 14th, in where TMG prepared a CCTS V3.0 package for stepping into the next Open Development Prcess (ODP) step 6, the implementation verification phase, by January 2008.

This ODP step continues until at least two independent implementations have been confirmed the successful implementation of CCTS V3.0. According this confirmation, the CCTS V3.0 will become an international UN/CEFACT Technical Specification, which is in other words an international standard published by UN/CEFACT.

The UN/CEFACT Open Development Process (ODP) calls for a eight step approach to developing UN/CEFACT Standards. These eight steps are:

  1. Proposal
  2. Requirements Determination
  3. First Draft
  4. Working Drafts
  5. Public Review
  6. Implementation Verification
  7. Approval The UN/CEFACT
  8. Maintenance
