It is hard to believe that SAP has been offering a portal product for about ten years now.  For those of you old timers like me, you remember a product called Workplace.  The SAP portal products have come a long way in that time but the demands of everyday business mean there is plenty more to do.

One area of customer interest that I'm seeing almost daily is how can I use my current investment in the SAP NetWeaver Portal as an external facing web presence?  We have a number of customers that are successfully running the SAP NetWeaver Portal as a vendor/supplier portal, an employee self service portal, a web store and even as their company's internet home page.

But for everyone customer that is using the portal as an external web presence, there are probably five or more who are not.  So SAP is looking for input from customers who have and have not implemented an external facing portal.  So in an effort to improve the functionality and quality of the SAP NetWeaver Portal solution, we are looking for your help.

In this survey, we focus on customers who have implemented or are planning to implement a web-based portal for access by users external to their organization. It doesn't matter if you used SAP or another solution. Your input will be very valuable to us when planning and prioritizing product enhancements.  It will also help us identify gaps in documentation and implementation processes that we can fill by various means like enhanced e-learning, how-to guides, etc.  It will help us to deliver solutions with maximum value to organizations such as yours.

Here is the link to the survey:

https://www.benchmarking.sap.com/cgi-bin/qwebcorporate.dll?idx=FHZ7MP

Please consider spending 5 to 10 minutes to let SAP know your thoughts on the subject. For you time we are offering 20 SDN points.  The survey is anonymous but if you would like to receive the SDN points we will need SDN user id and email address to be able to assign the points.  They will not be distributed and will be deleted at the conclusion of the survey.

We are also looking for a few customers to do a follow-up phone survey with.  If you are interested in participating in this follow-up survey, there is a place at the conclusion of the online survey to indicate that. The follow-up should be no longer than a half an hour. If you are interested, we will need your name and email to schedule the call.  Again, this info will not be distributed and will be deleted at the conclusion of the survey.

Thanks in advance for you help with the project.

Real Mobility !

Posted by John Polus Sep 8, 2006
Whenever you think of mobile applications, most people envision applications running on a hand held device or maybe a portable computer. But what was probably the first mobile device and still the most prolific? Yep, you got it! It is the cell phone.

Even before the days of computers and the internet, the phone was a major leap in making the world a smaller place to live. Even now, in some of the most remote places on the planet, people have phone service of some kind. Why not develop application that allow people to interact with systems over the phone.

At TechEd 2006 come check out session UPE105 Developing Voice Applications with the SAP NetWeaver Voice.

Here is the abstract:

Learn how to develop and deploy voice applications with the SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer and the SAP NetWeaver Application Server for Java. Via the new SAP NetWeaver Voice framework, learn how to develop voice-based access for every SAP backend application. In this lecture, you will get an overview on voice technology and how to leverage voice applications to execute business functionality. You will learn how you can reduce costs and achieve return on investment by voice-enabling employee self-service access for your end users.

This session will show you to use the pre-configured SAP templates to leverage voice-based access to your backend systems. This session provides detailed walk through configuring a voice application with the SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer. Also, find out which SAP NetWeaver usage types need to be installed to use the SAP NetWeaver Voice framework.

There are a number of other mobile sessions at TechEd 2006. Most will be found in the User Productivity Enablement tract. You can find the sessions by track here for the US, Europe and India.

Hope to see you there.

An SAP NetWeaver Portal implementation brings about many challenges, both technical and political. So where do you go to find out everything you need to know. From how to optimize you portal performance on the network to how to set up and administrate portal content. From where does my portal fit in my IT infrastructure to finding our what is new to the NetWeaver portal. The one place this year is at SAP's TechEd events.

There are a number of sessions related to the NetWeaver Portal. Most will be found in the User Productivity Enablement tract. But don't forget to look in System and Platform Consolidation and Custom Development for other related sessions. You can find the sessions by track here for the US, Europe and India.

I specifically wanted to point to four of the session I'm doing in Las Vegas Next week. You will find them also in Amsterdam and all but the last one in India. They are:

Hope to see you there. And don't forget about SDN day on Monday
Hi everyone,

It seems like SAP NetWeaver Portal migration is still a popular topic. I use to get a couple of requests week for copies of the migration planning documents related to the webinar I gave in May 2005 called "Planning a Migration Project". I had a download link in the last blog but it expired a few days ago.

Most people have just wanted access to the documents so I have created a zip file with a copy of the presentation and all the documents that were referenced. You can download it here . The download link will be available for 100 days from today.

I also wanted to remind everyone that there is a page on service marketplace to get info on Enterprise Portal migrations. The direct link is http://service.sap.com/nw-epmig . It is your one stop shopping place to information on the migrations to the NetWeaver Portal.

Also don't forget about the /community [original link is broken] on SDN for your migration related questions.

Please note that the mainstream maintenance for SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0 on Web AS 6.20 (A.K.A EP6 SP2) ends on December 31, 2006.

May all your migrations be on time and under budget!

Several questions have come up since the webinar this morning. I wanted to make the answers available to everyone, so I'm putting it in this blog.

Replay
The first was how to get to the materials and the replay. This link will get you to the SDN page for the presentation and recording.

I was also asked if it was possible to download the recorded presentation to listen to it off line. Unfortunately, the download capability is not available. you have to be connected to SDN to view and listen to the recording.

Additional Training
Next, for those of you in the states and in particular those in the Philadelphia area, next week March 14th and 15th there will be a class targeted to the new functionality in the external facing portal scenario as well as other consideration about using the NetWeaver portal for external access. Use this link to register. The class is called RAFP20: Implementing an External Facing Portal

A new set of portal migration tools has been released with SAP NetWeaver 2004 SP Stack 14.

SAP NetWeaver 2004 SP Stack 14 includes new and improved migration tools that will shorten and facilitate the migration from SAP EP 5.0 and SAP EP 6.0 SP2 to SAP NetWeaver 2004.

The highlights of the improved tools are:

  1. Migration to all Support Package Stacks from SP14 and higher: The new tools will allow SAP NetWeaver 2004 customers to migrate directly from SAP EP 5.0 and SAP EP 6.0 SP2 to the latest SAP NetWeaver 2004 support package stack (SP Stack 14 or higher). Since it will no longer be necessary to first migrate to SP Stack 09 and then upgrade to the latest support package, downtime will be reduced.
  2. Migration from SAP EP 6.0 closely integrated with the Support Platform: The tools for migrating from SAP EP 6.0 SP2 will also strengthen integration with the Support Platform, which is an SAP proprietary testing engine for running tests and fixes on portal systems. Integration with the migration utilities enables the automatic execution of checks for migration system prerequisites and facilitates the execution of post-migration tests. The main benefit of closer integration with the Support Platform is the elimination of common configuration errors which can cause migration to fail.

The migration How-to guides How To Migrate from SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0 SP2 to SAP NetWeaver 2004 and How To Migrate from SAP Enterprise Portal 5.0 to SAP NetWeaver 2004 have been updated to reflect the changes in the migration tools. For the latest information on migration, refer to SAP Notes 732461 and 732458.

Note: The patch 8 KM migration tools released earlier are also valid for the migration to SP 14.

One for All!

With the 2004s release of the SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP has further added functionality that is called Multitenant Portal. This functionality allows one SAP NetWeaver Portal to look like many different distinct portals depending on the end user.

This is the second installment about new portal functionality in the 2004s version of SAP's NetWeaver Product. Check out the previous post, All for One! All for One and One for All - New Functions for the SAP NetWeaver Portal in 2004s, for more information on the Global Portal functionality of the SAP NetWeaver Portal on 2004s.

What is a Multitenant Portal?

A Multitenant is a single portal infrastructure hosted by a service provider that offers services, such as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), to internal and external customers. It supports the division of the portal into several logical units – the portal tenants. (“Many logical portals within one physical portal.”) A multitenant portal environment allows parallel entry points into the portal, and each entry point is referenced by a unique URL that is assigned to the end User.

Why a Multitenant Portal?

Within a single portal infrastructure, the service provider can provide content which is unique to different user groups. They can isolate the content of a group and apply access controls and permissions to customized content on a per user, group, or role basis.

Some Common Terms.

Service Provider - The vendor or host providing portal outsourcing services to multiple customers in a single portal infrastructure. Also referred to as the provider.
Portal Tenant - A customer instance defined in a multitenant portal environment. Each tenant has its own collection of customized content and services, which is available only to that customer, its business users and administrators, and the service provider.
Tenant Administrator - A tenant user who manages tenant-specific users or content in the design-time environment of a multitenant portal. A tenant administrator is employee of either the service provider or a tenant customer.
Global Administrator - An administrator of the service provider who has access to cross-tenant users or content in the design-time environment of a multitenant portal. Global administrators can be involved in tenant-specific management tasks; this is defined by the super administrator of the portal.

What is New in 2004s.

In the 2004s version of the NetWeaver portal, you have a number of features supporting the multitenant portal environment. There is Multi-language user interface support as well as Customer-specific branding and corporate identity. You can set up delegated administration for different customized content and per user/group/role permission infrastructure for controlling access to portal content. There are mass editing and transport operations along with a user management filtering mechanism for controlling access to users, groups, and roles per tenant.

From an administration point of view you have to be able to distinguish between global and tenant administrators. Below is an example of how you might divide the two types of administrators.

image
Figure 1. Possible Distribution of Administration Responsibilities

The global administrator defines the various tenants that will be hosted in the portal. Below is the administration screen. Besides a description for each tenant, the administrator defines the portal alias, the path to the logo, brand-name and stylesheets as well as other tenant specific information

image
Figure 2. Global Administrators Screen for Creating Tenants.

It isn't a striking example, but after the tenant configuration is completed, when you use the tenant alias to access the portal, you will get the specific logon screen for your tenant. See figure three below.

image
Figure 3. Different Logon Screens Based on the Portal Alias.

There are a number of benefits for using a multitenant landscape. Internal or external service providers can offer their services to multiple customers within on single portal infrastructure. There is a cost improvement through lower ongoing total costs for operating a multitenant environment rather than multiple portals. Risk is also reduced by having a less complex system landscape. You can also achieve system landscape optimization through reduction of hardware and system complexity. You can implement quality improvement through standardization and best practices. The standardizing and reuse of services by different tenants reduces the cost for the service and the cost per user.

All for One!

With the 2004s release of the SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP has further enhanced the global portal functionality. This functionality allows many physically separate portals to act as one.

Please stay tuned for the second installment to be posted soon, One for All! where I'll give you a peek at the multitenant functionality of the SAP NetWeaver Portal on 2004s.

What is a Global Portal?

Global Portal is a generic name for several configurations in which two or more portals are sharing content with each other. Implementing a Global Portal enables you to share, integrate and display multi-lingual information located in applications and persistence layers all over the world. The portals in this solution are organized as one single virtual content pool (federation). A Global Portal enables live and direct access to global applications and content without the need to deploy replication and synchronization mechanisms for content repositories.

Why a Global Portal?

To serve employees, customers and partners spread geographically.
To set up an IT infrastructure that is dispersed in numerous geographical locations worldwide.
To share, integrate and display multi-lingual information located in applications and persistence layers all over the world.
To provide live and direct access to global applications and content without the need to deploy replication and synchronization mechanisms for content repositories.
To set up secure connections between the different portals worldwide.
To set up an environment which ensures that only permitted users have access to sensitive content.

Some Common Terms.

Producer - A portal installation that provides remote access to locally deployed applications to other portals
Consumer - A portal installation that accesses the applications provided by the producer.
Portlet - An atomic UI unit that can be integrated in portal pages (aka iViews).
WSRP (Web Services for Remote Portlets) - It is an industry standard that is supported by all leading portal vendors. It enables interactive, presentation-oriented content services. SAP supports WSRP technically as well as by contributing to the standard.

What is New in 2004s.

In previous versions of the NetWeaver Portal, you were able to share iViews with other NetWeaver portals or other vendor's portals using WSRP. In the 2004s version of the NetWeaver portal, you can still share the portlets, but between SAP NetWeaver Portals you can share Roles, Worksets, and Pages too. You are now able to manage your global portal network of producers and consumers in the portal.

image
Figure 1. Administration Screen for Portal Consumers and Producers

Another feature, Remote Role Assignment, allows full sharing of the entire role. The portal content structure is consumed in the first access and is cached locally. All portal navigation features are fully supported. There is no administration effort to the consumer administrator other than assigning the role. The producer administrator has no extra work to perform.

image
Figure 2. Assignment of Remote Role. Notice producer name appended to role name.

Through the new copy & localize functionality a consumer portal can create local copies of content that are connected to the source on another portal. The copied content can be used and configured in the same way as local content. It allows flexible transport of portal content between portals. Portal content structure (roles, worksets and pages) is cloned by the consumer on their portal. This enables mixed scenarios (local / remote). That is, in the consuming portal you may have a role with pages from the local and remote portal or a given page my have portlets that are running on several different portals. All iViews are executed on the producer.

Hi everyone,

I've gotten several emails in the last few days from people saying that they can't get to the webinar I did back in May on Planning a Migration Project. There is apparently a problem getting at the Ebook on SDN where the documents reside. SDN is working on getting it resolved.

Most people have just wanted access to the documents so I have created a zip file with a copy of the presentation and all the documents that were referenced. You can download it here . The download link will be available for 100 days from today.

I also wanted to remind everyone that there is a new page on service marketplace to get info on Enterprise Portal migrations. The direct link is http://service.sap.com/nw-epmig . It is your one stop shopping place to information on the migrations to the NetWeaver Portal.

Also don't forget about the EP migration forum on SDN for your migration related questions.

One last thing, remember maintenance on EP 5.0 ends at the end of THIS month (September 30, 2005).

Happy migrating!

Updated Portal Migration Tools

For all of you who are planning a migration of your EP5 or EP6 portal to NetWeaver, I wanted to let you know there is a new version of the tools and documentation made available July 14, 2005. You can get the new materials at the same places as before. See my previous blog for the info.

Gathering the Documentation for an Enterprise Portal Migration is a Lot Like Herding Cats!

What's New

There is a new patch level of the tools available for SP9 of NetWeaver. Patch 8 is now the current level of the migration tools. Check out the migration guides for the specific details. There is also a new registration process to use the new tools. Customer note 854791 has the specific details. In general, you will open a customer message in the component EP-PIN-MIG and give it the text "RegKey Request". You will need to provide the following information:

1. Company name:
2. Customer number:
3. Contact details of the lead(s) for your EP migration project:
4. Are you planning to use the SAP portal migration utility?
5. Are you planning to use the SAP KM migration utility?
6. Do you plan to have an SAP consultant, partner, or other representative involved in your migration project?
7. Projected start date for your EP migration project:
8. Projected date for migrating to your production system:
9. Planned NW '04 go-live date for production system:
10. Source portal version (e.g., EP6 SP2 Patch30, EP5 SP6 Patch3 HF1)
11. Target portal version (e.g., EP6 SP9 Patch8)

Shortly after, you will be issued a key. Follow the directions in the migration giude. For the EP6 SP2 migration, you will enter this key when prompted by the migration tool. For EP5, the key is added to a property file on the portal system.

Only one key is needed for the entire landscape. This means that you only have to request one key for all the systems you plan to migrate.

Updates for EP6.0 SP2 to NW04 SP 9 migration:

1. A validation check for the portal Database input field was added to the migration tools
2. Note 834976 - bcp command uses default port instead of provided one
3. Migration fails when the portal is in strong encryption
4. Domain user (a user which is not local) cannot stop J2EE server

Updates for EP5.0 SP6 to NW04 SP 9 migration:

1. Mapping script was added to the skipping and mapping filter file so that customers will be able to map EP 5.0 pages to layouts which were created for the NW04 portal. This enables the compatibility of the NW04 pages to the EP 5.0 pages.
2. A pre-migration verification check of the user management configuration was added.
3. Support of data sources and systems with non-compliant PCD characters in the name/ID(like spaces)

If you were experiencing any of the above mentioned issues, make sure you download the new version of the tools

Keep an Eye Out

Migration will soon have its own page on SDN and on SAP's Service Marketplace. Look for general announcements. As soon as I have the information, I'll post it to SDN.

Reminder

SAP Maintenance on EP 5.0 ends September 30th 2005.

It seems like trying to get all the available information on Enterprise Portal migrations in one place is like herding cats. You know, you think you have it all together, but there is still one thing missing. I’m going to take a shot at helping you find all the various places to get information on EP migrations.

First the migration guides are published as How-to papers on service marketplace here is the link:

http://service.sap.com/nw-howtoguides

In the navigation panel, choose Portal, KM, and Collaboration. Then in the center window, expand the "ALL" entry. You will find the migration guides there. Choose the EP 5.0 to NetWeaver or the EP 6.0 SP2 to NetWeaver. Which ever meets your needs.

----------------------------------------------

Next, let's get the migration tools . They are also on service marketplace in the software download center. Follow this link:

http://service.sap.com/swdc

In the left hand navigation choose the path: Download -> Support Package and Patches -> Entry by Application Group -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER -> SAP NetWeaver 04 -> Entry by Component -> EP Migration.

Again select the appropriate software for the migration you are planning to do. Note, for the EP5 migration there is only the KMC migration tools. The tool for the EP5 portal migration is included in the actual EP 6.0 on NetWeaver software.

----------------------------------------------

Customer notes are another place to look for further information. The migration documentation references several important notes. This is the one area that will change probably as soon as this is posted. So here are the two main notes: The link to notes is:

Join me for the upcoming Know How Network Conference entitled "Planning an Enterprise Portal Migration Project", presented as part of the ongoing SAP NetWeaver Know-How Network Conference Series (KHNC)! There is more to doing an EP migration then just running the migration tools. This session will provide an outline for a plan to run a migration project. Topics also covered include items in the EP5 and EP6 that aren't migrated using the delivered tools. This will help in planning tasks for the migration project. Also included are some "accelerators" to help in the planning and documenting of the migration project.
