In the aftermath of SAP Teched 2011 Las Vegas, I'd like to share with you some thoughts and feedback reported from attendees on the SAP NetWeaver MDM and SAP Master Data Governance sessions that were given under the umbrella of the overall Enterprise Information Management (EIM) session track.
All MDM/MDG sessions were well received with an estimated rate of +50 participants per hands-on session and generally crowded lectures. There was a big general interest in all MDM/MDG sessions, but what attendees were particularly eager to know was:
SAP NetWeaver MDM and SAP Master Data Governance integration aspects Great interest in information governance through federated end-to-end MDM scenarios leveraging SAP NetWeaver MDM and SAP Master Data Governance.
MDM/MDG integration with SAP BusinessObjects Information Steward and Data Services Information governance through active master data quality control by measuring, visualizing and defining follow-up remediation tasks seems to become more and more relevant for leading enterprises.
I remember giving a lecture at SAP TechEd 2006 where I already touched the topic of active control of master data quality, but by that time my impression was that customers didn't care too much about it (at least, this is what I took from the session feedback, then). But now, with SAP BusinessObjects Information Steward being generally available, SAP has the appropriate solution in place to tackle this. Time is ripe now!
In this context, SAP BusinessObjects Information Steward provides a perfect means to be combined with SAP NetWeaver MDM and/or SAP Master Data Governance.
Embedded MDM with SAP Master Data Governance Great interest both in getting an overview and domain-specific knowledge [supplier, financials, materials (and upcoming customer)] plus information on general extensibility aspects.
With this positive momentum for SAP MDM solutions, on to SAP TechEd/SAPPHIRENOW Madrid. Don't miss the opportunity to get the latest news there on MDM at SAP.
Attending the SAP TechEd 2011 lectures and hands-on sessions about SAP Enterprise Information Management you can witness how this solution portfolio helps you to create, cleanse, integrate, manage, govern, and archive structured and unstructured data along the information lifecycle.
The session topics cover enterprise data warehouse management, master data management and governance, data integration and data quality management, information lifecycle management, and enterprise content management. You'll also find out the latest and greatest about in-memory computing including SAP HANA.

In this seminar, you can learn how master data governance approaches the data management problem within the SAP software landscape with utmost ease and efficiency. Whiteboard-led sessions provide insight into all aspects of the solution including data model, security, workflow, data replication, extensibility, and customization.
The MDM Info Collector creates a comprehensive snapshot (zip file) of MDM system info that can be used later by SAP Support for offline failure analysis. This accelerates the analysis and resolution of the reported failure.
What's New in Version 2.0 of MDM Info Collector
New features include:
Remote execution of the MDM Info Collector tool by "SAP MMC" (uses "Server Snapshot" functionality) When you do not have access to MDM Server on machine (e.g. the machine is managed by the IT department) but you still need to provide the MDM system info to SAP support, then you would like to use the remote execution. From your local Windows PC, run SAP MMC to collect info from a remote UNIX/Windows MDM machine, then download snapshot (containing info package) to your local machine (requires new SAP-Framework (720-path90) and updated MDM profile (available in MDM7.1 SP7 Patch7).
Supports also Master Data Import Server (MDIS) and Master Data Syndication Server (MDSS), in addition to the Master Data Server (MDS)
Collects much more information than before This additional information accelerates the analysis time of customer messages by SAP Support
Supports SSL As of MDM7.1 SP7
For more info, see the how-to information (PDF) that is attached to SAP Note 1522125.
As of SAP NetWeaver MDM 7.1 Support Package 07, the software fully supports secure communication using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. With this SSL support, communication between MDM clients and servers is encrypted to prevent unauthorized parties from accessing sensitive data.
SAP NetWeaver MDM 7.1 SP07 is generally available for customers at the Software Download Center at SAP Service Marketplace. For more information, see the SAP release information on the SAP Help Portal. (link above).
With the general availability of SAP Master Data Governance it is natural that there is more information to share with you about the software. Accordingly, the Embedded Master Data Management has been updated to better visualize and structure the related content.
Now, the upper part of the site also provides a dynamic part to continuously feature up-to-date news and events.
And the lower part now comprises an "Embedded MDM Knowledge and Collaboration Center" that provides relevant deep-dive links that are clearly structured according to the specific sub-topics such as collaborative spaces (forum, blogs) or documentation and extensions.

Enterprise Information Management (EIM) is a multi-facetted strategy that is all about keeping information and data as an enterprise asset. The top-line and bottom-line benefits of trusted information materialize in reliable company-wide analytics leading to the right business decisions, streamlined operational business processes and transactions, as well as enterprise-wide data governance and compliance. This also includes, for example, disciplines like information governance, master data management, data archiving, system decommissioning, retention management and content management.
To accommodate the EIM relevance, we have broadened our social communication channels and also started to feature main capabilities on Twitter. To stay tuned with what's going on in SAP's key EIM domains, you can follow these new SAP-run EIM Twitter accounts:
When configuring SAP NetWeaver MDM, different areas of expertise are involved which a single MDM Administrator may not necessarily cover out of the box without consulting additional subject matter experts, such as the database or system administrator.
The new MDM Configuration Assistent simplifies this task and turns it into an intuitive process that can be easily performed by the MDM Administrator without additional support.
The initial edition of the MDM Configuration Assistant guides MDM Administrators like a wizard through the configuration of the MDM Server for connecting it to a DB server which is a prerequisite for the creation of new repositories via the MDM Console. More configuration steps are planned to be included in later versions.
The new tool can be used as of SAP NetWeaver MDM 7.1 SP03 and higher.
