Sneak a Peek on the New Discovery System
SAP introduced the new version 3 of the SAP Discovery system for enterprise SOA at the various TechEd events during the last weeks. For those who could not make one of our sessions, let me summarize the key elements of the upcoming version 3 of the Discovery system. In version 3 the Discovery system still comprises of the well known tripod of hardware, software, and content included into one single package. Here is some insight into each of these areas:

Based on EhP1 and EhP2 there are more than 700 Enterprise Services provisioned by the ERP on the Discovery system. To make the Enterprise SOA Scenarios livelier, there are two implementations available: Based on the respective bundles the system carries an implementation of Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment (EBPP) as well as the Customer Fact Sheet (CFS). The EBPP scenario enables companies to present invoices and account information to a customer using the portal. The customer can view his open invoices, issue payments online, and analyze the invoices already paid. The CFS scenario shows how to navigate an individual Customer Fact Sheet using the portal.
The Industry Specific Scenarios contain examples from Banking, Public Sector and the Telecommunications Industry. For example the Public Sector scenario includes an “e-governance application” to improve a permit process for constituents. This increases employee productivity with cross-organizational workflows and shows an improved flexibility for adopting new processes in the public sector.
In the Component Specific demos we show a multitude of scenarios, such as proper Segregation of Duties (SoD) enforcement, enterprise role management, compliant provisioning, and super user privilege management from Out-of-the-Box Demonstrations - SAP GRC Access Control (GRC). There is an RFID simulation available that provides an overview and a demonstration of RFID incorporation into an RFID-enabled Integrated Outbound Logistics Process.
The Out-of-the-Box Demonstrations:Global Trade Services (GTS) scenarios show Custom Declaration Document, License Management, and Sanctioned Party List Screening. And there is so much more like the SAP xApp Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP xMII) to exchange data with shop floor and top floor applications and to work with production information. Then there is Solution Manager Maintenance Optimizer and Path Finder for Business User on the system as well.
Finally integration readiness relates to the coexistence of Discovery system with other SAP components like Duet or the Composition Environment (CE). With the necessary backend configuration, master data, and transactional data already in place the Discovery system can quickly be attached to a Duet landscape to serve as the ERP backend. Thus there are fewer complexities when supporting the ERP scenarios for Duet SP3. The Discovery system is ready for an easy integration with NetWeaver CE in a side car approach. This architecture simulates a customer’s real life landscape where the Discovery system serves as a backend for CE composites providing Enterprise Services consumed by CE ESR 7.1 and BI Data. This is on a high-level for the pure component perspective folks. One last thing:
You might ask when v3 is expected to available on the market. We are currently in the final preparations with our hardware partners to feed the master images into the production process. Thus there is a good chance that you will have something available for Christmas.
