The industry-wide trend from processing only human-generated data – the classic domain of SAP software – to include the processing of machine- and sensor-generated data created new set of BI challenges not only for huge enterprises, but as well for many companies in small and medium businesses. Technologies, like SAP in-memory computing, are just a part of the solution. Too often there is problem caused by a big disconnect between expectations defined at the kick-off of the technology implementation project and the reality when it goes life.

To avoid this problem you need to pair technology with correct implementation processes and people with appropriate skills. This is the goal of my SAP TechEd USA session EXP72 "HP experience from real world customer deployments of SAP HANA" : to equip you with understanding how to make your integration of new in-memory platform SAP HANA into existing environment smooth.

Your implementation process and required skills will be a result of a combination of use cases and chosen deployment model. Currently supported use cases for SAP HANA are Operational Data Marts, Agile Data Marts, and Applications Platform. The only deployment model available at the moment is an appliance-based one, with the cloud-based deployments expected closer to the end of 2011.

For the purpose of our discussion we will focus on the most typical use case of the appliance-based SAP HANA solution for Operational Data Marts.

Through the discussion we will look at the task of building detailed technical blueprint to satisfy functional and non-functional requirements of the solution to be built:

  1. High-level data architecture.
  2. Software components architecture.
  3. Lifecycle management approach.
  4. Software deployment architecture.
  5. Hardware deployment plan.

We will touch as well on the roles and skills required in this type of projects.

I hope to see you in person on my session on Tue. Sep. 13, 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Lounge 4, Clubhouse at SAP TechEd!
