Hi Natalia,

in LC system, cache size is defined as 90GB. Also the data cache used is 77 GB.

Cache-Specific Parameter Settings

Value

CACHE_SIZE 92,160.00 MB

CAT_CACHE_SUPPLY 371.50 MB

Data Cache Usage

Entire Data Cache 78,860.76 MB 85.64%

SQL Data 1,006.03 MB 1.09%

OMS Data 71,110.99 MB 77.23%

History/Undo 6,743.73 MB 7.32%

But the data volumes total size configured is 143 GB.

is the data written across all the 12 datafiles are is it writing data one by one?

if i want to reduce the data volume, can i simply delete the data file?

will anything happen if i delete the datafile.?

Hello RGC,

->> Please check the Data area usage first.

You could check it in LC10, for example, ... 'Memory Areas' -> Data Area

-->> "is the data written across all the 12 datafiles are is it writing data one by one?"

The data are written across all the 12 data volumes.

-->> "if i want to reduce the data volume, can i simply delete the data file?

will anything happen if i delete the datafile.?"

You can NOT "simply delete the data file".

As it was written in the MAXDB documentation, I also pointed in the above reply.

As of database version 7.6 you can delete data volumes when the database is in ONLINE status.

You could use the dbm command 'db_deletevolume data 12', for example, & connect to the database as dbm user < control, by default SAP installation > using dbmcli tool.

The data from the data volume 12 will be distributed to the remaining data volumes.

The data volume 12 will be deleted and the resources that were previously used by

the data volume 12 will be released.

< & Data volumes of the file (FILE) type will be deleted from the file system.>

Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

Hi,

I know this is a old question and this is an update,

You can use SAP MAXDB Database Studio to remove data volumes.

Select the Data Area tab and right click the volume you want to remove you will then be prompted to confirm you want to delete and the data contained in the volume will be distributed to the remaining volumes.

Hi Natalia,

Many thanks for the information.

kindly let me know what are the reports to delete the superfluous objects in LCA?

ATP and SNP applications are used in APO.

Suggest me how to run the sizing checks on the system especially LCA.

What are the LCA/liveCache versions/builds on your system?

Livecache Version: KERNEL 7.6.04 BUILD 009-123-182-193

DBMServer Version: DBMServer 7.6.04 Build 009-123-182-193

OS: AIX

Please suggest.

Also any specific reports to be scheduled in LCA, pls mention.

Hello RGC,

-> Please create the ticket to the component 'SV-BO-SCM' or 'BC-DB-LCA' ==>

we will be able to logon to your system & check the system, if the application

team on your side was not able to help you to reduce the data in liveCache.

-> To delete the TS superfluous objects in liveCache you could with application

reports /SAPAPO/TS_LCM_REORG & /SAPAPO/TS_LCM_REORG_SNP,

for example. Please review SAP note ::

577038 Data inconsistencies in SNP

&& check with your SNP application team if they run the recommended reports.

-> Please review the SAP note 1051709, if it's applied on your system.

Please see the note :: 800927 Standard jobs in the SCM/APO area

-> As you are using ATP in APO, please review the SAP Note No. 1097901

Hi Natalia,

Thanks for the OSS notes. But these are the general notes for LCA. my requirement is to reduce the LC database size. since it is growing and consuming huge memory.

how do i identify the unwanted/unused data in Livecache?

what are the possible ways to reduce the data?

I'm sure there are few jobs are scheduled to run like OM_REORG, DELETE_SIMSESS etc jobs. What are the other jobs which will remove the old data?

Please clarify.

Hello RGC,

-> "how do i identify the unwanted/unused data in Livecache?"

Did you use the application reports to delete the superfluous objects in liveCache?

What applications are you using in APO? < ATP? SNP? DB ? >

Did you run the sizing checks on your system?

What are the LCA/liveCache versions/builds on your system?

The "unwanted/unused data" on your system could be identified by your application team, for example.

Check how many planning version, sim. Version you have. Asked the application team to delete the testing unused data.

-> "what are the possible ways to reduce the data?"

Some steps were already recommended. If the application team could not help you, then I asked you to create the ticket to the component 'SV-BO-SCM' or 'BC-DB-LCA', we will be able to logon to your system & check the issue first.

Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

Hello RGC,

First of all what is the system version & liveCache version on your system?

Second, as SAP customer you could open the OSS ticket & get the SAP

Support. I recommend to start with the component 'SV-BO-SCM', if need to

check the configuration of the liveCache parameters & log/data volumes.

In general:

A) please review the documentation & SAP notes ::

869267 FAQ: MaxDB LOG area

846890 FAQ: MaxDB Administration

820824 FAQ: MaxDB / SAP liveCache technology

767598 Available documentation

B) There is SAP documentation available at

service.sap.com/liveCache

< See Best Practices for Solution Management: mySAP SCM link >

service.sap.com/scm -> Technology

C) There are the standard LCA reports recommended to run regularly.

D) "How do i reduce the size of Livecache Database?"

-> How much temporary data do you have in at liveCache?

Did you use the application reports to delete the superfluous objects in liveCache?

What applications are you using in APO?

Did you run the sizing checks on your system?

"Can the Log area or Data area be reduced?"

-> If the data area was over defined, then you could use dbm command 'db_deletevolume' as off 7.6 database version. This command could NOT be used for the log volumes.

Why the Log area has to be reduced? Please read the SAP note 869267 first.

If you need to reduce/change the size of the log volumes, please use the backup/restore procedure, SAP note: 457425 Homogenous liveCache copy using backup/restore

" or Can i do the reorg in MaxDB database?"

-> What do you mean?

"How to reduce the OMS data/ History data?"

-> Do you have too much OMS data or History data? Please check first if you

have the long running liveCache application transactions. The garbage collectors

will be trigged by the liveCache kernel regularly && they delete the history pages

in livECache. Please review the recommended in the note 767598 documentation.

Please use the DB Analyzer to find the bottleneck in liveCache.

Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
