I am quite new to SAP, so will all the seasoned people out there please forgive my ignorance, and also please help...
I was hoping that somebody could provide me with some details of what the typical roles and responsibilities a Basis Administrator normally performs.
Welcome to SDN.
I found this site very useful:

Good for understanding the Basis Administrator's
The position entails the following responsibilities:
1. Ongoing Basis support for the numerous server environments (SAP BW EP and Database)
2. Develop an ongoing upgrade and enhancement strategy for application of upgrades, support packages and OSS notes.
3. Transport system and transports
4. Installing and maintaining software including upgrades, applying kernel patches, OSS Notes, and Support Pack
I'm SAP Basis Admin (whatever that means since about 10 years. I think it's not possible to define exactly all the tasks and responsibilities. For some topics (e.g. Hardware, OS) the boundaries are not set clearly and depend from company to company.
Some buzzwords according to SAP-Basis:

- Correction- and Transport-System (TMS)
- Software-Correction-Support (Notes, Support Packages)
- System-Setup (Installation, Post-Installation, etc.)

Any detailed questions?

What i'm after is more of a list of roles, like the

The challenging part here is the Authorizations you give for the roles to which the users are linked. Developers get a different set of authorization objects and admin users get a different set. there are templates available for this. but specific roles/authorization objects will be mentioned in the respective component configuration guides(say XI/MI/BW etc..)
