Release transports to apply Support Packages?

Hello SAPients!

I'm an ABAP developer and I have some transports I've been working on, the system administrator (Basis) is asking me to release all my transports in order to apply some Support Packages, I don't remember that I had to do that in any other project I've worked on. My question is: Is it really necessary to release the transports I'm working on in order to apply the SAP Support Packages?

Thanks!

Do you know how this plays with CHARM being active?. We are facing the similar situation: Applying support packages we are being prompted to unlock some objects, however this will impact CHARM sequencing and control. anyone with experience here?

thanks

Hi,

The answer will be Yes and NO, actually the thing is while applying support packs we will phase error situation like object_locked due to unreleased transport requests in system which were created by developers. for that reason only u r administrator is asking you to release that requests.

But your administrator can unlock that objects by using SE03 while doing support packs if he face the Object_lock error situation. so i believe no need to bother abt unreleased requests.

Hi,

the answer from the subhash is absolutely correct.

As a ABAPER U need not to bother about unrelease transport requests while applying Support packs in ABAP system.

Because while applying patches in foreground it will shows the lock objects (i mean transport requests numbers) to unlock. then the basis poeple will unlock that requests in SE03 and they will go ahead with SP's work.

Hi,

Yes you need to unlock the objects held in your transport requests else Support Packs will not get applied to these objects....so for unlocking you either need to release the requests.

Through SE03 also you can unlock using Unlock option and give the transport request number you need to unlock.

From my point of view its better you release the requests.

No. You can just unlock the Transport request via SE03 and you can continue.

So you mean if we have 100s of transport that are not ready to go to the next system we will have to release all the transports?

I think there should be a way to ignore this when applying patches to the system.

I said unlock not release, and it is applicable for "Standard Program" not "Custom Program"

Well the reason am on this trend is because we are trying to apply patches to our BW system and the Basis guy said we need to release all the transports before they could continue the application of the patches, but I think there should be a way to ignore the transports or a work around for this.

let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

No. You need not to relase all the transport request, when you will apply the Patch it will prompt you that these program are locked in these request and you need to unlock them to apply the patch. on that time you need to go to SE03 and then unlock the request and then continue the support packs.

The support package import usually updates the object version to the latest updated one. And since the purposr of the suport packages is to enhance/correct functionality of the existing system features, you need to follow the process of releasing or unlocking the objects.\

As otherwise, it makes no benefit to the system, by application of the patches, so you cannot ignore it.

hello,

Yes while applying support packages it shows errors because it ' snot able to do the change in the objects locked in the transports.

So we can't go ahead untill we release those objects.

So it 's necessary to release objects. You need to release transports. This is usual practice..

No other way.
