In CRM you have situations (esp. in pure offline scenarios) when you create data without immediate numbering possibilities. Imagine a field person outside without server connection entering a BP, activities and maybe an order. These items need to be linked, but without a numbering this is not possible. Therefore SAP took up the concept of adding a GUID (Global Unique ID) to each object, so you do not need to assign number ranges to each offline site, but still have continoous, central numbering in CRM online.
Since ECC did not support these scenarios from the beginning, a GUID was not needed there in contrast to CRM.
