All,
How does standard SAP handle heat numbers?
We need to use Heat numbers or develop an approach to dealing with heat numbers. We are 100% positive that serial numbers are NOT the appropriate solution; however if we can make them work I have no trouble using them as the solution.
Our Heat Number requirements are as follows:
1. A heat number can apply to multiple eaches of the same material; previously we addressed this requirement by using an optional serial number. Not an optimal solution, we need to insure we capture at least one heat number for each heat number material.
2. A heat number can apply to different materials/line items on the same delivery.
3. The requirement to capture a heat number must be customer specific. We do not want to capture heat numbers when shipping between plants only when shipping to specific customers.
4. Ultimately we would like to be able to automatically generate the MTR reports for all heat numbers on a delivery.
5. Heat numbers would only be captured on shipping not receiving.
SAP Gurus - please let me know your thoughts on how we can handle the heat number requirements.
Thanks for your help!

A heat number is an identifier referencing the material test report which is the full blown explanation of what was done to test the material.
Itu2019s a reference number for a given material.
Ex: Pipes, fittings, values, connectors.
We are in the distribution industry selling construction materials.
