We are running both SRM-MDM and MDM on separate servers. Is it necessary to have separate client installs for both? For example, do I need to have two MDM Console client installs on my pc - one for MDM and one for SRM-MDM. If so, please explain why?
Just to make sure I understand. If the servers are on different upgrade/patch cycles, then a separate client install is necessary for SRM-MDM and MDM - is that accurate?

Yes, you got it correctly.. if there is patch difference then it may work, but not with service pack or version difference..
Check below mentioned 2 notes. This will give you more information.

It totally depends on the Version of SRM-MDM server and other MDM server. it is just close as patch difference then you can skip separate installation of client. but suppose if there is server pack difference or version difference like SRM-MDM server version is MDM 5.5.64.97 and other MDM server is 7.1..... or 5.5.62.... then in this case you have to installation separate client.
