sapinst with xming: no input possible

I try to install Solution Manager 7.0 EHP1 SR1 on AIX 6.1 and want to use xming on a windows PC for X-windows.

After starting sapinst on aix I receive the normal short window with the SAP people, then only a empty screen, where you normally type in the User and password for sapinst.

I have found , but resizing of the windows didn't help.

Any ideas or experiences with xming ? I also tried MobaXterm, which was recommended by a collegue, but had the same problems

Best regards,

Uta

P.S: My windows host and the SAP server are separated by firewall. Port 22 (ssh) is opened and xclock from sap-server is correctly started on my windows pc.

Do you still have problems? try to use this solution:

set this variable enviroment before export display...

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

This appears a JAVA problem...

I have same problem on aix host- no imput in xming or x-win32. Or blank window.

Solution from this thread: everytime manual resize window.

My solution: install CDE on aix (exist on base dvd1) - start CDE in xming or x-win32. And start sapinst in CDE environment.

I've had exactly the same problem... When you resize your window, you are able to enter values. (at least, I was...)

I had to re-size the screen for every entry that I had to make..

Kind regards,

Mark

Hello Mark,

but with Solman 70 EHP1 SR1 Instmaster DVD I ALWAYS get a blank screen: no selection of installation options or user or whatever. Resizing doesnt help.

On the same aix-host, I tried an ERP-instmaster-DVD (51038620_1_7.01_SR1_NW_ERP_CRM_SRM_SCM_INSTMASTER), too. There I CAN see the options ERP, SCM, etc... ( but for opening the sections I have to resize the window)

I found , but until now I was not able to suceed with solman - sapinst.

I tried starting sapinst server and gui separatly (but both on aix sap server) -> same problem with blank screen.

POLICY-Files:

Could it have to do something with the policy-Files ? Sapinst from Solman 7.0 SR1 EHP1 seems to use SAP JVM 6.1 and note 1240081 list several policy files for several sapinst. Normally I would think, that the policy is included in instmaster-DVD ? Is it really necessary to set JCE_POLICY for sapinstgui ?

# /sapmnt/SM1/sapinst/sapinst_exe.8716482.1300219869/jre/bin/java -version
java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 6.1.006)
SAP Java Server VM (build 6.1.006, Oct 13 2009 02:33:53 - 61_REL - optU - aix ppc64 - 6 - bas2:127656 (mixed mode))

I tested with several JCE_Policy-files (see also note 1240081). Nothing helped. Tomorrow I will probably try with policy file for SAP JVM 6.1

# java policy note 1240081 for SAP JVM 5.1
export JCE_POLICY_ZIP=/software/SAP/java/jce_policy-1_5_0.zip
./sapinstgui

# java policy  note 754699 ->1426759 ->https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/webpreLogin.do?source=jcesdk
export JCE_POLICY_ZIP=/software/SAP/java/unrestricted.zip
./sapinstgui

FROG-Message

I am not sure if the "frog.jar: version 7.20.18 08/11/10 sap.theme: null" message in sapinst output could be a problem:

Any suggestions ?

Uta

Hi Uta,

Try to install JRE 1.4.x - I don't think SolMan 7.0 works with java 1.6 (not even 1.5).

Hope it helps.

Hi Dao,

I have another solution now. I have configured vnc with tunneling through ssh and used vncviewer on Windows PC. sapinst works fine now.

Looks like xming is the problem!!!

JDK 1.4.2 on AIX was installed according note 1008311- Recommended Settings for NW 7.0 >= SR2 for the AIX JVM (J9). But sapinst uses its own (higher) SAPJVM.

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java14_64/
export TEMP=/sapmnt/SM1/sapinst
export SAPINST_JRE_HOME=/usr/java14_64/

# $JAVA_HOME/bin/java -fullversion
java full version "J2RE 1.4.2 IBM AIX 5L for PowerPC (64 bit JVM) build caix64142ifx-20110211a (SR13 FP8+PM31983)"

Thanks for all suggestions.

I think You need to install xming fonts and then, you should modify the application start with the option -ac

I put up with the window resizing work-around for a while too. But with a recent SP, even that wouldn't work any more. I had to finally give up on XMing.

Sean

Did you find any other software that worked instead of Xming?

Have you installed Xming-fonts?

Yes, re-installed both Xming and Xming-fonts, latest release. Still same problem.

Just use Attachmate Reflection, it works like a charm...

Or use vncserver on unix-sap-server and vncviewer on sapinst-PC. That works very fine and you don't need xserver on PC.

For AIX you can install the vncserver from the "AIX Toolbox for Linux Applications DVD" or from

http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/toolbox/date.html

If you have a firwall between your sap server and the PC you could also use tunneling via ssh and then you only have to open Port 22 in the firewall. You might have to adapt ssh-configfile for that on unix as well

/etc/ssh/sshd_config:

#AllowAgentForwarding yes #SAP inst (vnc)
AllowAgentForwarding yes
#AllowTcpForwarding yes #SAP inst (vnc)
AllowTcpForwarding yes

If you want to use twm as windowmanager you can add entries at the end of /.twmrc (root)

(Later /home/<sid>adm/twmrc as well)

#Menu for SAP
# - with csh
# - with windowtitle

Button3 = : root : f.menu "sapops"
menu "sapops"
{
"SAP" f.title
"Xterm" f.exec "exec xterm -ls -sl 4000 -T `whoami` -e sh&"
"- - - SM1 - - -" f.nop
"Xterm sm1adm" f.exec "exec xterm -ls -sl 4000 -T sm1adm -e su - sm1adm -c csh&"
"Xterm orasm1" f.exec "exec xterm -ls -sl 4000 -T orasm1 -e su - orasm1 -c csh&"
"" f.nop
"Close Window" f.delete
}

Uta

Thanks for the solution, we got the same issue with Blank SAPinst.

Can you please post the brief steps on how to configure the vncserver on the Unix server and how to run the vncview to connect to the vncserver? I didn't find any guide for this.
