Dear colleges,
the topic has already been discussed in the following thread:
(closed in november 2010)
I find the result of the discussion unsatisfying. I understood the following facts:
1. It is possible to remotely check in/out ABAP programs and even activate the programs. There are open source projects doing that: ZAPLink and SAPLink
2. Remote code check in is considered dangerous by some people.
3. There is a comercial Eclipse Plugin for ABAP development (https://www.ceon.nl/abapeclipse/), featuring Debugging, Workbench integration (Java GUI), Code completion...
4. There is an official external editor in development: See http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/media/uuid/40f164d4-46a4-2c10-f6... Page 43ff (October 2009)
I would like to reopen the discussion of the topic.
Regarding 2.: What difference does it make, if I use the ABAP Workbench or an external editor. Of cause, you should have any checked-in program validated before activation. That is a must have feature of any external editor.
A modern IDE boosts code quality by encouraging best practices and providing a good overview of the system in development (like outline/navigation view). I think, there is more danger in having a stone age IDE like the ABAP Workbench.
Regarding 4.: Is there any information about the progress of the project?
Thanks and regards,
André
