What is the difference between batch size and lot size. How do these quantities relate to production planning & machine capacity planning.

Hi Ishan,

As JK and SS rightly explained difference between batch and lot.

Here is different perspective:

Lot : A group (qty) of material, which has same parameters across all groups(lots) of materials.

Parameters of these lots are same.

Batch: A group (qty) of material, which has similar/different parameters across all groups (batches) of materials.

Parameters of these batches will be similar or different but not the same as of each others.

Hi,

Lot size: Some times specific materials are not referred individually but are represented in groups or lots.

When we maintian BOM/production version/routing it is sometime convinenit to maintain compoenent qty / operaion times ect.. for speciifc lots .. we also call them base qty.

we can create different master data for different lot sizes and it is consider in auto selection of this master data in production orders.

MRP can also intiate procurement / production in speciifc lots and this lot size in size is maintained in material master ans lot sizing procedure is maintianed in MRP customiziation.

Batch Size: some times batch size and lot size can be interheprited same in busienss langauge but they have fundamental

difference from SAP point of view. .

In SAP Batch is homoginious non reproducible Unit of material. The batch zise depends on GR qty of the specific batch.

Hi,

If you are havig lot sise in BOM, the component qty is required to manufactured particular lot size.

If you are using lot size in routing, the machine hours, labor hours is required to manufacture the lot size.

In Material master MRP view 1 if you use Lot size indicator as FX and enter the lot size, then the system will generate planned orders or purchase req for the lot size.

For Ex, if you have FX lot size 1000, then you requirement is 2000, then the system will trigger two planned orders with qty 1000 each.

Batch size is normally the size of the batch when receiving the batch number (batch) during GR (in production order / Purchase order).

Normally in industry they will have same meaning for lot size and batch size.

But in SAP we will give more importance to Lot size.

Thanks,

JK
