Sybase as database for BW

Dear experts,

Does any of you have experience with using Sybase as a database for BW?

I am at a customer site, where they are currently using Oracle for one BODI "dataware house" and Sybase for another BODI installation. They are now considering BW and wonder if they will use Sybase or Oracle.. Since Sybase now is an SAP product they are strongly considering that. I have only worked with BW on Oracle database, so I hope you experts can give me some directions=)

Regards Silje

Thanks for the answer!

But even though I wont be the one setting it up, I need to know if BW on top of Sybase is do-able. Is there any constraints saying that BW shold NOT be on top of Sybase?

Hello Silje.

Sorry for the late response but I just saw your question. As others have written, the SDN home page for [Sybase ASE|] currently states that ASE is in ramp up for ERP, SRM and CRM. There is no ramp-up for BW on Sybase ASE as of today but I'm very confident there will be ramp up programs for other products in the not so far future. I'm not going to give any dates/products in public yet but there are other products in development...

If your customer is interested in running BW on Sybase ASE you can send me an e-mail and I will establish contact to the right persons here at SAP.

Best regards,

Thanks guys!

A follow up question: Can I have Sybase database for BW even though I have Oracle database on ECC?

Hi Silje,

yes you can deploy such an environment. However I'm not sure when BW on Sybase ASE database will be available. Check this in Product Availability Matrix:

Hi Silje, not suer if you are asking either BW can run on Sybase DB. If so according SDN link:

[SAP on Sybase ASE|]

SAP is currently considering to port only following solution to Sybase's Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) DS:

ECC 6.0 EhP5, SRM 7.0 EhP1, CRM 7.0 EhP1.

Also according following SAP Note:

[1554717 - SYB: Planning information for SAP on Sybase ASE|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1554717]

Since SAP NW 7. 02 is not yet supported, SAP BW and SAP PI based on NW 7.02 are not yet supported either

So BW is currently not in scope.

Hi Silje,

If you are a BW Consultant and not a Basis consultant and not deal with database then it won't make any difference to you. This is because of the way SAP systems are designed.

SAP based the architecture of R/3 on a three-tier client/server

Presentation Server(GUI)

Application Server

Database Server

This layered architecture abstracts the complexities of the lower layer in the upper layers. e.g. not everyone need not be well versed with the database functionality. Similarly the users in the presentation layer need not know the complexities of the application layer.

So irrespective of the choice of the underlying database server the SAP BW package will run as usual.

Hope it resolves your doubt.
