SAP BW installation on HANA DB

BW on HANA guide mentions

"In a standard system, all mandatory instances except the database instance are installed on one host. The SAP HANA database is pre-installed. The database instance is remotely installed from the primary application server host."

what does this mean ? Would not one just simply dump all the BW 7.3 installation files on the hana server and start the install .

Would not the installation be similar for BW on Oracle, install oracle and then install the abap server on the same machine ?

Can anyone give a high level of the steps required to install BW 7.3 on HANA DB

Hello Rajarshi,

it's not the same as with other database. We currently do not support installing the application server on the HANA appliance. The primary application server must be installed on a separate server.

Per sap note 1953429 ABAP instance can be installed on the same host with Hana db.

What exactly are you looking for in "BW on HANA". Are you looking for the installation guidelines or development / transport guidelines ?

Hi,

The prerequisite is that you should already have the HANA box available and then go for the normal installation using updated SAPInst provided by SAP. Do you want to prepare a new BW on HANA system or want to prepare a system using Export from your exisitn BW system?

However, the steps are pretty straight forward for both the scenarios(Go for either Installation of Standard System or using the 'System Copy' option prepare the system from given export.

Thanks Rahul , In my case its for "Fresh Install" on BW 7.3 on HANA. and I do have SAP HANA SP3 ( Revision 25) on a seperate box

I have not tried it out yet , but in a simplistic SAP BW ( or any other installation like ERP, PI  etc)  installation on a single host system , one installs the DB ( say oracle: installing oracle , assigning it a SID etc )  and then using the installation master to install the application layer on the DB ( using the same SID etc ) .Since the DB and Application layer is on the same machine, its straightforward.

But since they are on seperate systems , how do I connect the two , or where in the installation would it ask for the DB server addess/ mount partitions etc .

and secondly what is "SL CONTROLLER 720 " that I see in the BW on HANA installation files ?

Hi Rajarshi,

I'd recommend you to upgrade to revision 26 (as mentioned in the reply to another thread). We are currently in process of performing PoC for BW on HANA and are facing lot of issues. Although revision 25 is more stable, the revision 26 is out last week and provides lot of bug fixes.

We are currently in process of upgrading to the new version.

ravindra , the min requirement for BW 7.3 on HANA is that HANA is SP3 . I know of a instance of  BW 7.3 on HANA version 20 quite stablely for many months now . My question was not regarding stability of HANA 25. but how to install BW 7.3. since you are doing a POC on it .. perhaps you can shed light on the installation of BW 7.3 on HANA

Rajashi: there is no direct install of BW 7.3 for the HANA appliance. You will have to install a standalone BW instance on another database  and then migrate to the SAP HANA appliance database.

Hi Rama,

Not necessary to create a BW system on diff database and migrate. You can install the BW 7.3 instance (application server) connected to HANA directly.
