Dear All,

We are planning for Hardware migration from a non-cluster to cluster environment.

Existing Landscape details:

Distributed system CI and DB on different hosts.

Hardware and OS detils (same for both the nodes):

Server :- SUNW,Sun-Fire-T200

OS:-      SunOS 5.10

Version:- Solaris 10

Firmware Version:-  OBP 4.20.4 2006/05/12

DB : Oracle 10g

New server deails:

Hardware clustering, please find the below details:

1.       Sun OS Release:- 5.11

          OS Version:- 11.0 64-bit (Solaris 11)

Hardware Details:-   Product Name:- SPARC T4-1

Sys Firmware  Version:- Sun System Firmware 8.1.4.e 14/01/2012

Sun OS Release:- 5.11

OS Version:- 11.0 64-bit

DB: Oralce 10g

We are doing the harware migration and the exisintg is a non-cluster environment and the newly migrating to cluster environment.

In this scenario is it ok if I perform a system copy with backup/restore.

Please suggest.

Regards,

Raj

You can use backup/restore method for the system copy just like you do for any system. But its always best to use R3load method (using SAPINST --export/import method)in this scenario as you will not have to do a vanilla SAP installation prior to doing a backup/restore.

R3load method has some added advantages like you can move to Oracle 11g on the clustered environment without the need to upgrade . This procedure recreates all tables ,indexes and views and as a result the data fragmentation is removed and  shrinks the database size as well which can be considerable if your database is highly fragmented.

Hi Ratnajit,

Backup/restore method is more efficient if there's no OS/DB migration issue.

Hi Raj,

I am not sure but "Oracle Database on Unix AIX,HP-UX,Linux,Mac OS X,Solaris,Tru64 Unix Operating Systems Installation and Configuration Requirements Quick Reference (8.0.5 to 11.2)" didn't mention thatOracle 10g is supported on Solaris 11, on Oracle Metalink.

Additionally, I highly suggest you that you upgrade the database release 11g asap, because of 10g is in the extended maintenance.

And, read the notes, below;

Note 1669684 - SAP on Solaris 11

Note 1643799 - Support for Solaris 11

Hi Orkun,

My query is still unanswered, whether I can perfomr a standard system copy with backup/restore method in my case as we are moving from non-cluster to the cluster environment.

You can restore the Oracle datafiles from non-clustered environment to the clustered environment, if you fulfill all the prerequisites such as OS support and so on. Please note that it may require some OS specific effort to confgure the database.
