Issue in material description text in material master after upload

Former Member

We uploaded material master through LSMW. The material description is having apostrophes " " in the field MAKTX before the material description where as in the file there is no apostrophes in material description. Example-

Material decription in file - Gear Box Housing.

After upload through LSMW, Material description in MM03

"Gear Box Housing"

Same happened in during service master upload.

We are not able to find why system is inserting apostrophes in material description

this is an Excel problem while saving.

I usually have this with material description that use " as inch sign.

Whenever there is such " sign in the text, Excel adds one at the beginning and one at the end of the content in a cell.

I usually replace the " with a sign that is not used in the file e.g. the german ä

Then save the Excel file  it as Unicode Text file.

Then open the text file with Notepad or wordpad

search for " signs and replace all with nothing

then search for your supplement character e.g. ä and replace it with " again.

(instead of a single replacement character you could even use a string of characters)

I have heard that you can avoid this Excel save problem by using a VBA code to save Excel as Unicode text,

Dear Jurgen,

Great !

I did what you explained and found the reasons for my issue. I also found where there is comma in description it is getting replaced with " ".

But where the description is like this-

  • Rod 4" X 4" X 7MTR there is no issue.
  • Nut F/700 there is no issue
  • Housing Cage 5583-5535-092180 there is no issue
  • LOCK NUT Part No # AN-20 there is no issue
  • FULCRUM 19.1 3/16 there is no issue
  • Hydro actuator PARTS PN : 2.945.0658.09 there is no issue

I could not understand what you meant by

(instead of a single replacement character you could even use a string of characters).

May I request you to explain bit  on this.

this Rod 4" X 4" X 7MTR

is probably not a problem as you have 2 inch signs

just try it with this text:

Rod 4 X 4" X 7MTR

and you will see what I meant

Dear Megha,

I think this is excel problem. You may try to save the excel file as tab Deliminated file it will read it as text file.

Open the load file in Excel and use the cleanse function to remove any non printable characters, then try load the data again, you may need to write a new LSMW to update the descriptions.

a inch sign is printable.

non-printable signs is another problem

There are even more issues with excel, saving to text and loading with LSMW

e.g. a text starting with the @ sign and

line breaks within one Excel cell
