Hi Soumya,

in addition to Kamal's answer I'd suggest to use the spec type REAL_GRP so you can see on first view that this is a reference substance and not a "normal" REAL_SUB

Dear all

the use of a "reference substance" does have pros and cons. In the normal EH&S Process a "REAL_GRP" is prepared (as Ralph explained), data is maintained on that level and the "Reference" REAL_SUB <=> REAL_GRP is done. Many companies are using "Rulesets" on REAL_SUB Level (Based on Expert Server rulests). These "rulesets" normaly writes "back"  dta on the level of REAL_SUB; now you need a "maintenance" philosophy. Becuase if you maintain data on the level of REAL_GRP and you maintain data by using a ruleset the same property/value assignmnet type might be effected. Therefore there is the "need" to "break" the reference on REAL_SUB level to RELA_GRP if you write back data ini a property there data is referenced fomr REAL_GRP; now you are "loosinG" the "update" mechnism; any update on REAL_GRP level wil not be "inherited" to REAL_SUb any more

On the top in claiss EHS you use DG_CL_SUB specifications as a "reference" as well. As explained by other: the use of a "reference" is a great mechanims to reduce maintenance operations on REAL_SUB level.

Therefore some companies (becuase of several reasons) do not use "reference" but "inheritance"; this "mechnism" is more flexible but at the same time more complex. The "inheritance" use "on high level" once again a "reference substance" that means you maintain once data and you can us this data often

Therefore the use of "Rulesets", "Reference" or "Inheritance" approach to populate the REAL_Sub is a "case by case" decision and in moste cases is discussed during the set up of EH&S

HI Soumya,

You can create substance in the transactions CG02BD/CG02/CGCL2.

This is master data in EH&S.

By using the Reference mechanism, you can minimize the re-doing things in data maintenance.

For ex., you are maintaining the Flash point value in one substance, where the same value should be maintained in other substances.....simply you can use the Reference mechanism to update the flash point, without adding manually.

find the link below for the same.
