Hi all,
I am running a POC project for WCEM 3.0 and we do not have an NWDI in place, but want to run the project on a single development workplace.
In the "Development and Extension Guide - Content Guide" (https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700001259532012E) on page 16 it is said that I can "leave the Development Component Name Prefix field empty, because the SAP NetWeaver Development Infrastructure is not installed". Therefore I think it should be possible to make enhancements without the usage of the NWDI. If I do so according to the guide, I am not able to "finish" this step.
Does anyone have an idea? Is it basically possible to do WCEM enhancements without NWDI?
Thanks,
Marcus
Hi Marcus,
Take a look at this.
http://scn.sap.com/people/kalle.pokkinen/blog/2011/01/20/e-commerce-on-open-source
I would just like to tell you regardless what some people may say, there are no 'tricks' involved - the above was compiled by some people I worked with in the past and the guide demonstrates how to extract and run a much better development environment than SAP offers and everything is Open-Source.
Please let me know if you have any questions of get stuck on this. Also, check Thibaut's page, some good info there as well.

Hope it helps,

Hi Marcus & Daniel,
let's rephrase it: with "tricks" I mean that from the technical point of view several other ways exist to work w/o NWDS/NWDI but this isn't supported by SAP. It's of course up to you to try it out w/o any guarantee.
Only one remark relating the solution mentioned by Daniel:
This solution has been implemented based on Web Channel Enablement (aka ISA). In this case we're talking about Web Channel Experience Management (WCEM) so that the mentioned solution maybe needs to be adjusted to some degree.
Best regards,
Adam
Hi Adam,
Correct, that solution will not work as it is for WCEM. There is additional work involved setting up and resolving all references - looking at the bright side, doing such exercise let one have a better understand about the framework.
@Marcus:
Definitely using NWDI for your POC will save you time - all the documentation offered by SAP is based on this environment and its easy to follow - and as Adam mentioned, SAP should back you up if you run into trouble...

Hi Marcus,
Currently I am working on WCEM 3.0 POC. I am getting issue when I develop sample appliation in NWDS. Please find the issue in below mentioned thread.
http://scn.sap.com/thread/3593131
is NWDI require to deploy the sample appliaiton in SAP Portal server (NetWeaver Web Application Serer) ?
Please help me.
Thanks & Regards,
Rami Reddy
NWDS should be installed before proceding with the extensions (See the install section) .A plugin which provides support for the user when creating the extension modules is also provided for this environment.

Elena

Hi Marcus,
yes, that's right. The only one way which is supported by SAP is the usage of NWDI.
There are some "tricks" which are possible to do some changes w/o NWDI, but this is nothing what can be explained seriously at this stage.
BTW, could you please give me the information which guide you're reading, i.e. which guide version and which WCEM release?
Best regards,
Adam
Hi Adam,
okay, so you recommend to use NWDI.
I went through the Development and Extension Guide for WCEM 3.0 from the SAP Help Portal (https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700001259532012E).
Thanks,
Marcus
Hi Marcus,
this Dev&Ext guide is focussing especially content management area.
Nevertheless, the same rules should apply there as well so that I'll ask internally at SAP to check the correctness of this documentation.
For any WCEM-wide details relating development and expension please use the following guide:
--> Development Information
----> Development and Extension Guide: Generic Information
Best Regards,
Adam
