Search Connectors: Is TREX engine mandatory for NW portal?

Greetings Experts, Gurus and SAP Sages,

Currently I'm involved in setting up a test system for assessing usability of WebDynpro transactions for EAM ("Simplicity"). We have enabled the NetWeaver service for HTML and we've set up a test user with certain portal roles.

When using some of those components related to search, we are coming up against errors e.g. "Search connector for category EAM_TECHOBJ is not active".

My question is: is TREX mandatory for searches in NetWeaver portal / Web Dynpros / or are there alternatives? Is TREX in fact synonymous with Embedded Search? May search connectors be created / activated without running TREX?

I am asking as this issue affects our landscaping.

I would appreciate a very basic guidance, as at this point I'm trying to understand the relationship between the portal, TREX, SES, Embedded Search & SAP Enterprise Search.

As of now I'd mostly like to know if anyone tried activating the same portal search functions and have they found setting up TREX indispensible.

at first we have indeed to clarify some namings.

TREX: is your search engine

Embedded Search: is a search service which used a search engine like TREX. This is available in AS ABAP since 7.01 for indexing business objects.

Search Engine Service / SES : is a search service which used a search engine like TREX. This is available in AS ABAP since 7.0 for indexing business objects. It is the old version regarding Embedded Search.

In your case you have to create a Search Connector which belongs to Embedded Search. For Embedded Search it is mandatory to use a TREX (or an BWA).

Currently I am not sure if you use a NetWeaver / Enterprise Portal. You are using by sure WebDynpro for ABAP but probaply not in a Portal but the TREX belongs to your ABAP system, not to a Portal.

Hello Sebastian,

TREX is not mandatory for searches in NWBC.

You can create a collective search help (for both equipment and FL) and than maintain search help assignment for related WD application from below this customizing step.

PS : it might not work in notification in your system if note 1933234 is missing.
