Incremental versus full filesystem backups

Hi,

Any thoughts on incremental as opposed to full file system backups of the Filestore where reports are stored.

We have a full backup of our FRS but anothere systme currnetly only has incremenatl backup of FRS. (i.e. what changed between one day and the next)

A third-party backup tool.

Any thoughts reagrding full versus incremental filesystem backup.

Suspect full safer (we have our cms alos backed up).

Thoughts?

Thanks

Philip

Hi Philip,

Along with the Full system backup I would suggest you to take a BIAR backup as well as Full system backup might not be useful for partial content recovery. Below link will tell you the contents of different backup type (Full system/BIAR)

Hi Philip,

Please note BIAR backup is always recommended for small set of BI content typically List of reports in a particular folder and their associated objects (Universe, connection, etc). If you want to take full BIAR backup You can use LCM and schedule them at off businesshours as well.

Hi Mani,

Like the idea of scheduling biar backup.

However, if new content added to a folder since lcm job created, this wouldn't be picked up?

What woudl really like is to have ability in bo4 to dynamically repliacet content to biar backup so could individually restore a folder or reports in a folder.

In dos windows can easily backup folder contentdynamically using wildcards.

Is anything similar in bo4 such that will backup entire content of a particular folder (i.e pick up new reports added since biar job created.

Thnaks

Hi Philip

This is not possible using the  current LCM  backup process as we explicitly select the required contents in the LCM  job.

Hi Philip,

Both are good, I would give more points to Incremental backup of FRS on your SAN/NAS drives. Just making sure that all files are upto date.

Hi Sohel,

Thanks for update.

Any reasons on why better incremental.  Backup a bit quicker.

Thanks

As you said you do use some third party tool to make filestore and its backup in sync, it saves time as compare to manual backup. and the destination will be exact replica of source at any given point of time, For manual backup you will have to decide a window on daily basis to perform the task and if DR situation occurs before that time then you will lose some data however in case of automatic sync of the fie system the backup will be current always if it makes sense.
