Hi,

Do HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) and DG (Dangerous Goods) refer to the same thing? For HAZMAT to be implemented, what are the areas that have to be covered/considered in SAP EHS(M)?

Thank you,

Sruthi

Dear Sruthi

If i remember correct: HAZMAT is a specification type which is used in context of HSM (to my knowlegde). DG is something different.

Let us try the other way around:

Anything relaetd to classic Hazardous substance management is shown here:

http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_06/helpdata/en/a5/3adda043be11d188fe0000e8322f96/frameset.htm

chapter: Hazardous Substance Management (EHS-HSM) (and related subchapters)

Anything related to DG can be found in same place but chapter

"Dangerous Goods Management (EHS-DGP)"

There is one word of warning necessary. Because of history there is on the topc a further HSM tool available which should not be used any more.

Only fo completeness some reference should be given:

http://scn.sap.com/thread/1947066

VM04: data transfering from specification database to table MGEFhttps://scn.sap.com/thread/2071047

https://help.sap.com/saphelp_45b/helpdata/en/c6/f83c814afa11d182b90000e829fbfe/content.htm

Do not use the old way to handle hazardous materials !

Further hint:

Topic "DG" is related to the transport of chemicals; HSM is related in most case to "storage" of chemicals and "hanlding" of chemicals; a further link here is:

"Industrial Hygiene and Safety (EHS-IHS)" (same help.sap.com link as before). Here the context is "high level" to define which specification is handled at which work area; the tool is more relate to the "hazard" than to the "danger".

What are you looking for to get? Regarding any of the tools mentioned. there are best practise available to generate a "draft" set up.

Or is you rinterest more related to the "Component Extension"? May be check:

http://help.sap.com/ehs-comp

PS: to get the idea about the difference of "dangerous goods management" and "Hazardous substance management" is not easy

Thank you Christoph! The thing is I am trying to understand if what is commonly used in business parlance as HAZMAT, is referred to as DG in SAP EHS.

From the links you have sent, I can see there is a clear difference beween EHS HSM and EHS DG in SAP, HSM being used for handling substances "contained" in an area, while DG  is used at the time of transporting substances.

In other words, when business says they follow HAZMAT, what should we consider recommending- Hazardous Substance Management or DG or both?

Thank you,

Dear Sruthi

not easy to answer question. If you check e .g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazmat

or

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/HAZMAT

or

http://www.hazmat.nl/

Therefore the termes are "mixed"and people does have problems to differentiate them.

If we talk about Standard SAP ERP Installation I believe if the term "HAZMAT" is used then there is a 80% probability that we talk about DG and not HSM. HSM is used (as shown in the context of the links) more in context of "storage/handling" of chemistry not in transportation. As it is more important for a chemical company to get the materials transported you can assume that people talks about SAP EHS DG and not HSM if they use the term "HAZMAT"; but HSM does clealry have some signifance as well.

Hope this helps.

Hazardous substances are not the same as dangerous goods. Dangerous goods are “substances or objects that, when transported, pose a risk to public safety, to the life and health of humans and animals, and to property, due to their nature, properties, or state.”

German laws define hazardous substances as substances, preparations, or

products that possess the following characteristics:

  • Chemical laws have defined them as hazardous substances or hazardous

        Preparations

  • They present an explosion hazard
  • They are likely to become by-products during their manufacture or use
  • They are recognized to transmit pathogens.

Thank you Christoph for providing the distinction between the two! I have a lot more questions!. Could you please help me with the below?

1. What modules/components of EHS apply to business processes related to Inbound transportation and Outbound transportation? I understand that DG checks can be carried out at Sales document level, Shipping document level and Shipment level. Are there any other areas I am missing out on?

2. As regards GR and Putaway product, I read that Hazardous Substance Management can be used in integration with SAP- WM, where in some function modules can be enabled to carry out HSM checks. My question is what exactly do these checks do? What regulations do they cater to? Also, I am unable to find the configuration node "Flexible Hazardous Substance Check" in SPRO.

3. Just like DG has specific transport regulations, like ADR in Europe, 49 CFR for roadways in US, IATA (global), are there any specific noteworthy regulations that HSM deals in?

Much appreciate your inputs!

Sruthi

regarding:

Are you referring to SAP EHS SVT? I try the other way around: EHS is integrated to a high degree in SAP SD, MM, PP processes. Regarding transportation normally only "outbound" and not inbound is of interest. Regarding HSM this is different as HSM can be used to support the "inbound" (at which storage location is allowed to store the material)

But I don't catch your question (may be check as well: http://scn.sap.com/thread/3307349 )

May be check as well: http://scn.sap.com/thread/563092

Regarding:

2. As regards GR and Putaway product, I read that Hazardous Substance Management can be used in integration with SAP- WM, where in some function modules can be enabled to carry out HSM checks. My question is what exactly do these checks do?

If you dig deeper in customizing etc, in most cases it is tested if e,g, storage location can be used to e.g. store material having high hazards (water polution); I believe you can check as well which material can be stored with which material together.

Check may be:

Chapter "Hazardous Substance Master" etc.

Regarding:

What regulations do they cater to? Also, I am unable to find the configuration node "Flexible Hazardous Substance Check" in SPRO.

You must activate an ehs business function (as part of SAP ERP 6.0 EnhPack 3). After activation customizing is enhanced (check: http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_03/helpdata/en/46/2d6174ac3e4252e10000000a1553f6/content.htm)

chapter: Flexible Hazardous Substance Check)

Regarding your last question: not really. Most of the regulations which are checked are local ones or defined by the company itself

Hi Christoph,

First off, I would like to thank you for answering some of the areas I needed clarification in.

1. Regarding my first question, I wanted to know the touchpoints between EHS - DG and SAP-Transportation Management (TM). Since there are broadly two components to TM - Inbound Transportation and Outbound transportation, I would like to understand if SAP EHS DG also caters to checks on Inbound Transportation. Sometimes, companies are responsible for the Inbound Shipments as well - in such scenarios, how do we implement DG? I understand we can use HSM for GR and Putaway processes (part of Inbound Logistics, not specifically Inbound Transportation).

2. Regarding my question on being unable to find the "Flexible Hazardous Substance Check", is Hazardous Substance Master (EHS-HSM-MD) a separate Business Function? Or is the "Flexible..check" config node dependent on the WM component? In my understanding, I think we have activated all the business functions necessary for EHS...

Thank you,

Sruthi

Some more DG questions!

Where in configuration do we mention the link between Transportation Route and Shipping Conditions? Say, we want DG Checks to allow only a particular Shipping Condition with a given Transportation Route, how do we configure this?

Thank you!

Hi Sruthi,

Please check the following link concerning transportation :

http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/ERPLO/Transportation+Configuration+and+Process+Flow

Also you will find customizing points in DG :

Dangerous Goods Management --> Dangerous Goods Checks and Dangerous Goods Documents/EDI --> Dangerous Goods Checks

If I am not mistaking, DG checks are user exits. The check is performed when you want to save an SD document.

Thank you Phillipe, Chandrashekhar, Christoph. I have a scenario related question now, again related to DG Checks.

1. When I change the Shipping Conditions in Sales Order, route redetermination takes place, and a new route is determined. How is this configured in SAP?

2. Where do we find the Mode of Transport Category in DG Master? Say, a given regulation has to follow a certain mode of transport category, where do we maintain it?

3. How does the system impose DG Checks if the wrong mode of transport category is picked as per the regulation? E.g., If the Mode of Transport Category picked for IMDG is Roadways?

4. Where in Configuration do we specify the link betwen Route to be picked and Mode of Transport Category? If I want that for a certain Mode of Transport Category, only a certain Route should be picked, where do I need to establish this relationship?

Thank you,

Sruthi

Hi Christoph,

I have a question on HSM.

Is it necessary to maintain a Substance database (CG02) in order to maintain a Hazardous Substance Master?

Could you please let me know your thoughts on the approach below? The scenario is client wants to create separate storage types for hazardous materials in his warehouse

1. Maintain Hazardous Substance Master (mass upload/conversion) without maintaining the substnce database in CG02, thus avoiding the HS-fill functionality.

2. Configure Flexible Hazardous Management checks

My question here is if the Hazardous Substance Master can be maintained without the need for maintaining CG02.

Thank you,

Sruthi

Hi Christoph,

I would like to know how the system determines what Mode of Transport Category should be picked by a given regulation. Where is configuration is this maintained? Please refer to screenshot below.

Dear Sruthi,

regarding:

"Is it necessary to maintain a Substance database (CG02) in order to maintain a Hazardous Substance Master?"

Answer is to my knowlegde: no. But it is highly recommended to do so.

Check tcode in EH&S: or

http://www.tcodesearch.com/transaction-codes/search?module=ehs

or:

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/85/90f74059890b06e10000000a155106/content.htm

You could use corresponding tcode to create hazardous substance master whitout maintenance using cg02 or cg02bd.

PLease check SPRO activities (filling hazardous substance master etc.) to understand the needs.

Regarding your second topic: which type of screen do you show here? I am no sure..

Regarding your other topic may be I misinterpret your question:

"I would like to know how the system determines what Mode of Transport Category should be picked by a given regulation. "

If your have prepared the "right" set up the ADNR is related to "river" transport (by ship), ADR is road transport etc. But this is only the "master data part". The SAP SD process is "dealing" with different topic.

Can the "list of materials" be transported using a route (and in >80% of cases) more than one "transport mode" (e..g first by ship, then by road etc,) This is "done" in SD process. reer to topic of Phillipe.

To understand the whole customizing etc. needs in DG process is not easy. PLease refer to document: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41109: You will hopefully find enough links to other thread dealing with DG topics.

Thank you Christoph. I have some more questions. Most of them are high level questions, but I would really appreciate your inputs on them.

The Client has a legacy MSDS system. But to have a single ERP instance for governing all their business processes, they want to have SAP generate the MSDS. Again, this is with the following limitations:

a) There will be no external content provider

Question - In the absense of external content provider, what are the possible ways of maintaining legacy Phrases in SAP? Also, if you could suggest what steps have to be taken into account for Phrase Conversion, Substance Conversion, without an external content provider?

I understand we have to create Characterisitcs for corresponding Phrase Sets. Any further considerations like this one..?

b) If we are to implement HSM-WM checks, DG checks, we need master data HSMD, DG Master. How can we do this without having to maintain CG02?

c) How is the Transport Not Approved indicator set in DG Master? Is it automatically set? Or does a person have to manually check each regulation against each mode of transport category permitted, and set the check?

d) The screenshot I have above is from the DG Master. I wanted to know how the system determines what mode of transport category should be used for a given regulation

Much appreciate all your help! Thank you for your time!

Dear Sruthi

Regarding:

a) There will be no external content provider

Question - In the absense of external content provider, what are the possible ways of maintaining legacy Phrases in SAP? Also, if you could suggest what steps have to be taken into account for Phrase Conversion, Substance Conversion, without an external content provider?

I understand we have to create Characterisitcs for corresponding Phrase Sets. Any further considerations like this one..?

1.) you can clealry maintain the phrases by your own

2.) you can clearly maintain legal content by your own

Legacy System:

First step is: you need to have a "plan" how you would like to use EHS. Without this plan you should not start to take over data from other systems.

Now depending on your decision you need to map old structure to new structure and e.g. create phrases etc. By using standard EHS techniques you can create phrases, data records on specification level based on data of legacy system (e.g. using standard imoprt of for specifictaion updates: OCC can be used as well). to do so you neeed "mapping" between old and new structure. As this is "unique" to the project (and legacy system and based on your decision how to use EHS)  no further hints can be given

Regarding:

b) If we are to implement HSM-WM checks, DG checks, we need master data HSMD, DG Master. How can we do this without having to maintain CG02?

If I "ignore" your topic before:  it is quit simple: you need to prepare a "basic" ehs customizing set up, prepare phrases etc. and then you can create DG master and HSM master using the TCODEs available. It is not recommended to do so but ut is possible.

Regarding:

c) How is the Transport Not Approved indicator set in DG Master? Is it automatically set? Or does a person have to manually check each regulation against each mode of transport category permitted, and set the check?

Yes: this is a decision of a person who is responisble to decide about "DG" topics

Check: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41109

You will find many links regarding:

a.) how to "handle" legacy systems

b.) how to start a EHS project

c.) topics regarding DG checks etc.

There are "rare" threads in this forum regarding HSM. PLease execute a quiry. You should find them  easily.

In this threads (as mentioned above) as well the topic of "content providing" is mentioned; but using SCN query functionalityyou will find clerly more links.

Just start your project. Only by doing so you will detect the pitfalls etc. by yourself
