product stewardship ; msds

Hi,

1. What exactly is product stewardship? What does it comprise? What is the business significance?

What does the functionality in sap do? what are the system requirements, config etc?

2. If we want to implement product stewardship, what requirements should we gather?

3. Client already has an msds authoring system. If that has to be interfaced into sap and report shipped

Out of sap, what are the ways of doing it? The idea is to use sap only for report shipping the msds. It will be generated in legacy.

Client is interested to know interfacing feasibility.

Thank you for your time! Much appreciate your inputs.

Sruthi

The wikipedia definition is very good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_stewardship

You can also look under "Responsible Care", a program of the American Chemistry Council (see extract below). Product safety and stewardship is more than just including a safety data sheet with a chemical shipment. It involves all aspects of managing the production, shipping, use, and disposal of the product. SAP has solutions for managing the evaluation of the risks of chemicals including your efforts to substitute less hazardous chemicals, managing the usage scenarios, managing the recycling of the product at end of life, managing hazardous waste, and more.

WHAT IS PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP?

Product
stewardship is the practice of making health, safety and environmental
protection an integral part of the life cycle of chemicals, as described in
these guidelines. It is an integral component of the global chemical industry’s
Responsible Care® initiative and includes evaluations of risks and
the development of actions to protect human health and the environment
commensurate with those risks.

Product stewardship is a
shared responsibility between chemical producers, their suppliers and their
customers. It requires the development of close, sustained dialogue and working
relationships with suppliers, customers, and others in relevant value chains.
These parties should share information up and down the value chain to ensure
that chemicals are used and managed safely throughout their life-cycle.  In doing so, they will also help companies
and their partners meet the increasing demand for safe and
environmentally-sustainable uses of chemicals.

thank you Mary! This is helpful in understanding what product stewardship means. How can this be implemented in SAP..? what are the factors to be considered?

Dear Sruthi

there is no "clear" answer to your question: how can this be implemented in SAP..?

Company need to decide which tools should be used: e.g. SAP EHS Management, SAP Produict and REACH Compliance Seuit, SAP GTS etc. etc. Then an internal organization is needed etc.

There is a "bundle" of solutions by SAP which are related to "Product Stewardship". Check e.g.

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41109

Coming back to your other questions

3. Client already has an msds authoring system. If that has to be interfaced into sap and report shipped

Out of sap, what are the ways of doing it? The idea is to use sap only for report shipping the msds. It will be generated in legacy.

Client is interested to know interfacing feasibility.

Potential Steps are:

1.) export MSDS form old system

2.) IMport MSDS in SAP EH&S

3.) prepare standard WWI set up and standard SAP MSDS distribution process (assuming that order etc. are placed in SAP SD).

You need a robust way to handle changes (new MSDS) etc. but this scereio can be run wihout problem (yes: there are some manual steps required; by "clever" use of software design may be you can make it "100%" automatic but in most cases this is not possible
