Monitoring Questions

Hi All,

Greetings !!

Environment:

Suse Linux 10

BI 4 SP 02 Patch 18

4 machine cluster

Tomcat(default)

We are using Monitoring Application for first time on our servers. We went through number of very interesting documents, forums, blogs however still had some basic questions,

1] Need to understand how the CMSLogonLogoff probe works as once CMS is down I am not sure if alert will be triggered as whole system will be down.

2] What is the best practice to configure watchlist if we have 4 node cluster on which node should we configure Monitoring alerts?

3] Do we have any standard guide or documentation specific to configuring different probes, metrics, watches and alerts?

4] Our requirement is pretty simple as of now to keep watch on status of CMS,IOFRS,Webi and CR servers whether they are up and running?

Steps Tried:

Created new watch with below rule on Primary node for all the above servers,

e.g.

Danger Rule: TEST_BIP_PRIMARY.WebIntelligenceProcessingServer$'Server Running State'==0 || TEST_BIP_SECONDARY.WebIntelligenceProcessingServer$'Server Running State'==0 || TEST_BIP_TERTIARY.WebIntelligenceProcessingServer$'Server Running State'==0 || TEST_BIP_FOURTH.WebIntelligenceProcessingServer$'Server Running State'==0

Sincerely,

Nikhil Dharme

1] Need to understand how the CMSLogonLogoff probe works as once CMS is down I am not sure if alert will be triggered as whole system will be down.

A)  This is true.  However, you could run the probe from a different CMS cluster and connect to the CMS you want to monitor.

2] What is the best practice to configure watchlist if we have 4 node cluster on which node should we configure Monitoring alerts?

A)  When you create a watch / alert the objects are created in the system database not on a specific node.  The important thing to remember is that you need an Adaptive Processing Server (Monitoring Service) running in order for the watches and alerts to be triggered.  You can run 2 different APS (Monitoring Services) per cluster (one service on each physical node for redundancy).  They work in an active/passive cluster.  So if one monitoring service goes down, the passive one will become active and keep monitoring successfully (since the watches and alerts are stored centrally in the CMS system database)

3] Do we have any standard guide or documentation specific to configuring different probes, metrics, watches and alerts?

A)  Officially, information about monitoring is found in the BI Platform 4.0 Administrator's Guide on http://help.sap.com  However, i'd recommend checking out the following blogs:

4] Our requirement is pretty simple as of now to keep watch on status of CMS,IOFRS,Webi and CR servers whether they are up and running?

A)  Refer to the section "Monitoring the Availability of a BI Server' section in the following blog

Hi Toby,

Hope you are doing well !!

First thanks for your valuable comments and postings.

Just was curious to know if we have any posts stating the meaning and the values to be given for watchlist parameters for servers.

e.g.BIP_PRIMARY.DashboardDesignProcessingServer$'Request Failure Rate _%_'>5

What is Request Failure Rate?

Why is the value 5 given by default?

In similar terms other parameters and there values?

Sincerely,

Nikhil,

This is how it is interpreted.

Requests Failure Rate (%) -  The number of requests that the server failed to process as a percentage of the last 500 requests that the server has received.

I would recommend you to have a look here
