Question on DG Packaging checks

Hello!

The functionality for packaging code checks for DG is currently integrated with Handling Unit Management, and the packaging material proposal for a material typically happens at the time of outbound delivery for a material, as per standard SAP functionality.

We have a requirement where the goods are packaged for delivery immediately after production, so that at the time of delivery, they are only shipped out.

They are packaged as per regulatory requirements immediately after production, and the packaging checks have to be done right here at this stage to ensure the material is packed as per regulations.

Has anybody worked on such a scenario before? If yes, could you please share your insights on how this scenario can be handled in SAP?

Thank you for your time!

Regards,

Sruthi

Hi !

I haven't worked in such scenario, but it might be possible in the following way,

In DG check, we have to check the particular material is allowed to transport in the intended  way & intended quantity to a region in a particular packaging. This is just the outline of logic.

Using this we can do DG check in

1.Sales documents

2.Shipping documents

3.Shipment documents.

In you case, the logic is that, during the production of the material itself, DG checks for the mode of transport, country, & quantity has to be checked. that means before the production is started, the customer finalise the exact material quantity, mode of transport, transit route..?

In that case, you can implement DG checks in Sales documents like, http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/de/5170b24c4b11d18a110000e816ae6e/frameset.htm

so that, DG check is already done for the DG material to be delivered. once the material is produced. Once delivery or shipment is created, you print required DG documents

Hope this helps a little,

Hi

For Performing Packing Check , first you have to choose appropriate standard packaging codes which complies the UN regulations , then you need maintain same packaging code in your DG Master in packaging group tab.

so while triggering the DG Checks in your sales/Shipment order ,  F.M will fetch the Packaging code information from DG Handling Units , it will check either particular packaging code is compatable for u r delivery route or not , if it ok then it shouldn't throw any error , if it is un compatable then system alerts " Packaging code not allowed as single/outer package"

Hi Subash,

Thank you for your inputs!

I don't think they have the customer, route, MOTC info. etc before production. Are there any DG-PP standard SAP integration scenarios that you might be aware of?

Hi Balajee,

Thank you for your inputs!  We are still not sure if the above standard functionality will be applicable to the scenario since products are packed right after production. But I have some questions on it.

Is packaging code information provided by Content Provider? I think the DG classification would have the packaging group and DG letters. What other packaging related information would we have to maintain manually in the DG Master?

Also, could you give some info. on the Product Release functionality in DG (DGPREL)? How does it work?

Thank you for your time!

Dear Sruthi

to my knowledge there is no integration of EHS DG in PP process. I believe may be this is the "wrong" way to think about it.

If you read cross: http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/en/de/516f8a4c4b11d18a110000e816ae6e/content.htm?framese...

and subchapter: Integration of DG in Handling Units (Shipping Documents)

the topic is explained on a quite good level.

So on level of prodcution you simply produce the material . This production process can be related to a SD order. Therefore you could try to "backtrack" but you still don't know route etc. Here you need at least the delivery. And as the user can "interact" and decided different (before delivery is closed) it is not worth to go this way.

Think about stock as material which is "generally" available.. No wbased on specific order you need to pack regarding specific order/delivery.

Hi Sruthi

Product Release Functionality  process supports the DG Business process about standard packaging as per UN Regulations. If you set Product Release indicator for Transport in DGM.

The data for product release is available in the dangerous goods master on the Product Release tab page.

In Further stage in Logistics (While releasing Sales order or Purchase order) the system simply check this indicator.

Few Advantages of Product Release in DG Master

.

  • You can select packagings for materials that are subject to dangerous goods regulations on the basis of packing instructions for UN-listed substances.

  • You can select relevant dangerous goods regulations that allow the packaging.

  • You can select the indicators for transport for the respective dangerous goods regulations.

  • You can save the actual packaging data in the dangerous goods master with additional information, such as packing instructions and description of packaging.

  • You can run dangerous goods checks based on the RELEASED (Product Is Released) indicator for transport in sales, shipping, and shipment.
