A OLAP Data Source Connection

Hello. When developing a new workspace we have made available SAP BW OLAP data source connections that represent SAP BW queries versus a data source system. The reasoning for this methodology is to allow us to control which queries are available for users to execute versus having the open data source system where they can execute any query in A OLAP.

My question is this - it doesn't appear within ONE single workspace you can insert an OLAP data source connection more than once. So, for example we have a SAP BW Query assigned to OLAP Data Source A. We insert Data Source A for Tab 1 where we want particular values entered for our prompts. We then want to insert Tab 2 which would also be assigned to OLAP Data Source A which we want a different set of values entered for the prompts. The insertion of OLAP Data Source A a second time does not seem possible.

Hi Lynn

Normally you can do what you want by simply selecting the existing Data Source A in the "Data" Panel and then inserting a new crosstab. This new crosstab will be independent of any existing crosstab which also uses Data Source A.

But the problem is that you want to use different prompt values. It's the prompt values which restrict the data returned to AOLAP so when you change the prompt values for Data Source A, it will impact all crosstabs that use Data Source A.

If you wish to retain having a Data Source mapping to a BW query, one solution is to create a duplicate connection within OLAP Connections in the CMC but give it a different name. Now the same query can be used twice and both with different prompt values.

Thank you for your response, Ian. That is what we suspected was the case but appreciate you verifying. We are not sure how many times they will want to insert the duplicate connection so are going to have to reconsider our approach in regards to connection management.

Hi Lynn,

The only way to insert the same query multiple times in the same workspace is to use the system connection.

Is it feasible for you to implement query access authorizations on BW side, which will benefit (can be reused by) any BI client?

Regards,

Boris

Hi Boris. We have been researching what options are available to use in respect to authorizations. We do have query access authorization opportunities on the BI side but wanted to explore possibilities on the A OLAP side as well. Thank you for your timely response!
