Managing Long-Running Queries in SAP HANA

Dear All,

I have been encountering some customer queries around existence of specific  capability in SAP HANA around the query workload management architecture and policies framework (admission, scheduling and execution control) which appears to be prevalent in some commercial DB vendors eg: Teradata (Dynamic Workload Manager), IBM's workflow-management for DB2, etc ...In some cases human intervention is required to act based on alerts received upon breach of a policy (say query exceeds limits on estimated row counts, processing times,  or joins by a given percentage or absolute threshold values)

I'm enclosing some section from this whitepaper on Managing Long-Running queries compiled by a university in Munich, Germany  (Technishce Universitat Munchen) and HP Labs, for your quick understanding of the context.

Appreciate if anyone could let me know if such a capability is on the anvil in the next version of HANA SP8 or future HANA roadmap or does SAP need to be directly contacted for this or is there a 3rd party vendor which provides a solution on this?

Hi there

Yes, such features are currently in development and no, this - in principle - cannot be provided by any 3rd party tool.

As SP8 is likely going to be a stabilization SP I would not expect too many new features in it - especially not something fundamental like workload management.
