Hi,
We are looking to move to bo4.1 sp03 from bo4 sp08 - considering patch upggrade but also considering fresh install.
From reading some posts on forums notice there is a (albeit unsupported) option to have this switch in the UMT.
One of options being considered is using UMT to migrate reports as far quicker than lcm.
Universes/users could be moved via promotion management from bo4 sp08 to a server using bo 4.1 but speed of report migration woudl be too slow.
Downside to using promotion management as tool to move all content is that thousands of reports and woudl put strain on tomact application server and we want as small downtime as possible to allow users to stop using bo4 sp08 and switch over to the new 4.1.
Thoughts.
Anyone used upgrade managment tool in this way to move content from 4.0 to 4.1 and any bad effects anybody has seen?
Thanks
Upgrade managment tool is for only to upgrade the content from 3.1 or older systems to 4.0 or higher systems.
UMT should not be used to promote the content from 4.0 and 4.1 systems. Use only Promotion Management move between 4.0 systems.

Hello,
Please check this wiki article to see our recommandation to use properly the promotion management tool:

This should help you.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
Situation is that we are being recommended to do a fresh install of 4.1 sp03 as otherwise would have to go thorough a declustering exercise and alot of other testing, upgrading from oracle 11.2.0.3 to oracle 11.2.0.4, to be officially supported along with replacing ntdll.dll on server - hence option of fresh install rather than patch existing environmnet from bo4 sp08 to bo 4.1 sp03.
We have a brand new clean server whcih wnated to put 4.1. sp03 on but porblme we have is to get content from old server running bo4 sp08 to new server running 4.1 sp08 qucikly enough.
Would like to know how we can cleanly get large amount of content cleanly from olde server to new server thus minimising downtime.
Thansk
I would like to correct you here, we can use UMT for migration of objects even from 4.0 to 4.1. Even though it is not supported but it does work wonders.
@Philip: I searched some content and could not find any links which would help with your question regards to the bad effects.
The parameter "-internal_use_only_noversioncheck" is used to avoid the application to check the version at source which would be migrated to newer version.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
Have used command line interface for promoting objects and also found to be slow.
Need a practical way of moving large amount of content from bo4 sp08 to bo4.1 sp03 to keep downtime to a minmium as want users stop uisng bo4 sp08 systme and couple of hours later begin uisng bo4.1 sp03 but need to be able to migrate thousands of report sin this window.
Is there quick way of doing this?
Thanks
Hi,

Check out SAP BO KB 1969259 - LCM CLI Master Note - How to promote thousands of objects across BI4 environments? on http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1969259
The LCM CLI can help you from timeouts occurrence and tomcat7 constrain.
This is what I did.
- edit C:\Users\svc_boxi\Downloads\mig.properties
action=promote
importLocation=C:\Users\svc_boxi\Downloads\mig.lcmbiar
LCM_CMS=WAPP246N:6400
LCM_username=Administrator
LCM_password=xxxxxx
Destination_CMS=WAPP246N:6400
Destination_userName=Administrator
Destination_password=xxxxxx
includeSecurity=false
exportDependencies=false
consolelog=false
- Start LCMBIAR import
C:\Users\svc_boxi\Downloads>"e:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\win64_x64\scripts\lcm_cli.bat" -lcmproperty C:\Users\svc_boxi\Downloads\mig.properties
Hope this helps,

Hi,
1. The Dependency Calculation and Security Calculations take up the most processing cycles and affect overall performance When you run bulk promotion.
2. Tips from KB 1969259 - LCM CLI Master Note - How to promote thousands of objects across BI4 environments?
"TEMP Space: Ensure that the system running LCM_CLI and the AJS server have ample TEMP space (2-3 times the size of selection) to ensure objects are processed without failure.
AJS HEAP Size: Ensure that the Adaptive Job Server (AJS) processing the jobs handling a large number of objects are sized appropriately. Example there maybe a need to increase the maximum heap to 8 GB Max Heap (-Xmx) or more to ensure
the job finishes and in time."
My Sizing Configuration assign LCM APS (1 GB) for the following services.
· Visual Difference Service
· Promotion Management ClearCase Service
· Promotion Management Service
However, my take is that it should be at least 2 GB as the BIAR export/import took day and night before I increase the heapsize and reduce to hours after the more heap is added.
APS.LCM
- increase Max. Heapspace to 2G; -Xmx2G.
Hope this helps,
Jin-Chong
Since replication ist not working anymore we have to use third party and since we have already payed we better use a well supported 3rd party tool -

well all these "solutions" are extra work - and I will not use it -better to use 3rd party tools to do that. But why not use an old useful tool which could handle migrations in the past ?

omg. that is bad - an update from different Bo-Versions within 4.2.x should be possible too - every patch is waisting ressources on the server and a clean new install with a working update management tool would be very helpfull
