We needed to modify a numeric column in a table from numeric (11,2) to numeric(18,8), to do this we had to:
- create a new table
- loa dthe data from old table
-Rename the new table to old name.
We could have naturally create a new column in the table and copy the data and rename the column, but we did not want to chnage the order of the columns.
I am trying to understand the technical reasons behind the inexistence of MODIFY column where one want to modify data type in IQ, while it should be easir in IQ dans in ASE. My question is why modify coulmn in Sybase IQ is not working? what are the technical reasons for it?

I have also run into this problem. I am running IQ 16.0 sp1. I wanted to increase the number of characters in one of the columns so I have to create a new column, copy the data, delete the old column then rename the new column.
Is there any reason the MODIFY function is not implemented in IQ?
