BOM Usage and BOM Category -authorization controls

Former Member

Hi Team ,

We are working some of  BOM authorization controls. Wanted to get clarified on the difference and usage of BOM Category and BOM usage .

Efficient way to control  user authorizations is  at BOM category level/usage level ?

As we enter at BOM functions the usage only will the BOM category gets referenced from where ? We dont do any customization for BOM categories right ??

Request your inputs on this , please ..

Thanks ,

MK

Hi MK,

Lets say we are using one BOM for production. So that will be relevant for production only. That might not be relevant for plant maintenance. Please check the T code OS20. SAP help says as below:

Define BOM Usages

In this step, you define the BOM usages.

When you define a BOM usage, you define the configuration of the item status.
The item status is made up of a number of indicators in the BOM item (for example, "relevant to production", "relevant to engineering/design", and so on). The item status controls how the BOM item is processed in related application areas.
For example, the production department requires a BOM with all the items that are relevant to production. These items are first copied to the planned order. When the planned order is converted to a production order, the items are copied to the production order. The production order tells the production department which materials and assemblies it has to produce.

Note

  • If bills of material already exist which have a BOM usage, you can no longer delete the BOM usage. There are also restrictions to the changes you can make to the definition of the BOM usage.
  • You should only activate the indicator "Relevant to plant maintenance" for BOM usages which are to be used in plant maintenance.

Example

You can define BOM usages as shown in the following example:

BOM usgProd.Engin.SparePMSalesCosting
1+..--.
(Production)
2.+.--.
(Engineering/design)

+ = You must make an entry
. = You can make an entry
     - = You cannot make an entry

Here, BOM usage 1 "Production" is defined such that BOM items in BOMs with this usage

  • must contain the indicator "relevant to production"
  • can contain the indicators "relevant to engineering/design", "spare part" and "relevant to costing"
  • cannot contain the indicators "relevant to plant maintenance" and "relevant to sales and distribution".

Default settings

In the standard SAP System, a number of BOM usages are defined.

Recommendation

Adapt the predefined BOM usages to your requirements or define new BOM usages.

Please refer the link for BOM category.

BOM Categories - BOMs (PP-BD-BOM) - SAP Libraryzation

Basically transaction will decide which BOM category will be selected.

BOM usage can be customized but category customization I have never come across.

BOM category is selected by system with specific transaction. This is not an input by user. System selected.

Better to make the authorization in usage level. Category level authorization can be done in T code level itself.

Hope this will help.

Krishnendu.

Hi MK,

BOM Categories represent the different objects for which you create the BOM. E.g.: Material BOM, Equipment BOM, etc..

Here you have the SAP Help for it:

BOM Categories - BOMs (PP-BD-BOM) - SAP Library

BOM Usages represent the applicability of the BOM. E.g.: Production, Sales, etc..

Here you have the SAP Help for it:

BOM Usage - BOMs (PP-BD-BOM) - SAP Library

I don´t think it is needed to control authorizations for both of them. The BOM category is already managed by different t-code. The Material BOM is created with CS01, but the Equipment BOM is created with IB01, etc..

Thanks and Regards,

Mariano
