I never used Visual studio and don't know much about it. Is this only the way? or do I require a visual studio.

Only way. You need VS 2010 or 2012 or 2013 and you will have to download SAP Crystal Reports, Developer Version for Visual Studio .NET from here:

( CR 2011 does not install any SDK)

Are there any newer help files? The .chm files that you link to have tutorials that are a bit dated and the steps don't make sense in newer versions of Visual Studio(2010+).

No other file I am aware of. There are no changes of consequence from when the referenced resource was written to now.

As for steps in CRVS not making sense - you'll have to be a bit more specific...
