Using SUM for SP SAP Basis

Hello,

We have to update SAP Basis component from SP 17 to SP 28, I found a note that recomends use SUM rather than SPAM when you have to apply more than 3 SPS level, so

Can I use SUM for install SAP Basis 28 SP? the NW is 7.0 with ECC 6.0 with dual-stack

Hello,

the two replys above state all that is relevant.
Just a small addition concerning dual-stack systems: the SUM will always use a shadow, as the "single system" mode is not supported for dual-stack systems.

Hello

There will be other components involved to patch when you update the SAP_BASIS as there are dependencies involved (eg: SAP_APPL, etc). If you are using MOPZ to create a stack file then MOPZ will take care of the dependencies involved. SUM basically uses SPAM/SAINT to patch but will also provide you few options to choose different update strategies like downtime minimized with the help of a shadow system. As you have a dual stack system SUM will let you handle both the updates in a console. You will have two tabs, one for ABAP and one for Java. I was able to use JSPM on a Netweaver 7.0 based system but if you are unable to use JSPM as mentioned by Yves and if it is suggesting you to use SUM when you launch it then it is better to use SUM for both.

Hello

Everything is said in the note you have read (1803986 - Rules to use SUM or SPAM/SAINT to apply SPs for ABAP stacks).

For ABAP stack you can use either SUM or SPAM, SUM offers few advantages

  • shows the point-of-no-return with reset option that can withdraw all changes
  • can also upgrade the kernel
  • allows to reduce downtime if you are applying a lot of SP

SPAM is simpler and, as doing less check, is by the end faster.

The number of SP to apply is important enough for recommending SUM especially if downtime is an issue.

For the Java stack you won't have the choice as stated in note 1589311 - Replacements of outdated tools via SL Toolset

you must use SUM for all NetWeaver versions from 7.0 and higher.

Important remark: you cannot only apply Basis SP only, SP should be applied for all the components (Basis, Abap, Appl...)

Best regards
