I want to use Sql Server as a datasource for my crystal reports 2008 - what version of sql server is supported by CR2008?

To some degree, this depends on the CR 2008 patch level you are using. For SP 7, please see the SAP Crystal Reports 2008 SP7 for Windows - Supported Platforms.
