as described in the Help Portal, this feature is used to have a different possibility to look at product structure elements that belong together from a business, functional, geometrical, or whatever else perspective. Different in the sence that the product structure itself is modeled e.g. in a pure CAD-driven or physical or whatever else approach.
Good example is e.g. that you only want to traverse and see electrical elements of a product structure, or electronic, or software, ....
