Info on Basic/surface material-SAP EHS Management(Product Compliance)

Hi All

I need to correct my understanding on some aspects of Basic material.

1. I assume there is only one way to create the basic material  that is through Basic Material Specialist role.

   If any other way please let me know.

2.What is the difference between Basic material and Surface material ?

   Both of the above gives details of the chemical properties of the material. My understanding is surface material gives details

  of the composition of the coatings(paint) provided on the material, where as basic material gives the chemical composition of the

  material.

For ex : I have Automotive door which is made up of alloy steel and this door is coated with colour red. So the basic material will

give the chemical composition of alloy steel and Surface material will give the details coat(paint) composition.

3. How can a material ( Material master Record ) be assigned both with Basic material and Surface material ?

    Basic material is done by creating a Basic/Compliance view but how about Surface material .

4. How is sepcification is different from Basic material/Surface material ?

Thanks & Regrads

Hi Satish,

1. I assume there is only one way to create the basic material  that is through Basic Material Specialist role.

Yes, this is the only way in EHSM standard functionality to create basic materials.

Yes, exactly. Basic materials and surfaces are on the same layer of the EHSM data model.

3. How can a material ( Material master Record ) be assigned both with Basic material and Surface material ?

    Basic material is done by creating a Basic/Compliance view but how about Surface material .

Exactly the same way like for basic materials. Surfaces are assigned in the same way.

If you assign basic materials and surfaces to a coated part you would do it by giving weight percentages.

E.g.

- Automotive door (coated)

--> Steel alloy 99,97%

--> Red paint 0,03%

Alternatively if you have the BOM and the surface is in the BOM you would assign the surface to the BOM item.

E.g.

- MATNR1: Automotive door (coated)

-- MATNR2: Automotive door (not coated) 99,9 kg

---> Steel 100%

-- MATNR3: Red paint (300 ml)

---> Red paint 100%

4. How is sepcification is different from Basic material/Surface material ?

EHSM uses the EHS specification database in some areas.

There are many specifications of different specification types used in EHSM. For Basic Materials typically specification type BASMAT and for surfaces specification type SURFACE is used. The specifications keep most of the data of the BASMATs and SURFACEs.

Compliance releated data is not stored in the specification database. This information is stored in a separate Business Object called "Compliance Data Object" which is linked to the product compliance specifications.

Hello Andreas

Thanks a lot of your prompt replies.

1. Regarding the point no 3, my understanding for your reply is that a view similar to basic material view will be created to show that material is being coated. So if material has both

basic material and surface material it will have two views. One view will contain the weight of material (basic data view ) and other view will have weight of paint ( Surface view ).The weight of both would cumulate to 100% and in this case we will not give details of the composition.

- Automotive door (coated)

--> Steel alloy 99,97% ( Basic material data  view)

--> Red paint 0,03%    ( Surface material data view ).

Hope this is wnat  you mean.

Regarding the second part of the reply you mean to say that if the surface has to be included in the

BOM, then it has to be assigned to the material which is at the item level level in the BOM.

Assume the assignment is done as before by view creation in Material master or is there

any other way that can be done in BOM itself.

2. What would be  the view name for Surface material ? Any idea where in IMG for Material master

    we would configure it ?

3.  When you say Compliance releated data, is it  Product structure of Compliance data, Compliance check data, Weight and Composition details, Check Compliane details etc.

4. Finally,  how is Business Object  "Compliance Data Object"  is linked to the product compliance specifications ?

Thanks & Regards

No, it is the same view. It is called basic material composition (in Compliance Workbench under "Weight and composition" view), but you would maintain the surfaces there, too.

Regarding the second part of the reply you mean to say that if the surface has to be included in the

Assume the assignment is done as before by view creation in Material master or is there

any other way that can be done in BOM itself.

Typically the BOM is the source in EHSM. Then it depends on how the BOM looks like. If you have the paint as a BOM item you would use the 2nd approach. If you have only the coated part and no BOM containing the paint you would go for the first approach.

2. What would be  the view name for Surface material ? Any idea where in IMG for Material master

    we would configure it ?

It's the basic material composition. No different view.

3.  When you say Compliance releated data, is it  Product structure of Compliance data, Compliance check data, Weight and Composition details, Check Compliane details etc.

Yes. Only part of the product structure (composition) is still stored in EH&S specification database.

4. Finally,  how is Business Object  "Compliance Data Object"  is linked to the product compliance specifications ?

If you create basic materials / surfaces via the Basic material Specialist role a CDO AND a specification is created and they are automaticallly linked.

Products and components are typically created by the BOMBOS transfer. In EHSM Product Compliance CDOs and specifications are created during BOMBOS and they are linked.

It is not really possible (in EHSM standard) to link specifications and CDOs manually.
