After upgrading Crystal Reports to version13.0.13.1597 - Getting an integer divide by zero for some report

Hi,

I currently have installed in the same environment the following:

• VS 2010

• VS 2013

• Crystal Reports for VS version 13.0.13.1597 which was installed from the exe.

Some of the reports in VS2010 and VS2013 are running fine. In VS 2013 I'm getting the following error:

A first chance exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

Please help in resolving this error.

Hi Ben

Looks to me like VS is looking for PDB files which it normally does not do. I suspect this may be an environmental or VS setting. Maybe this will help a bit:

Hi Ludek,

Thanks for responding to my question.  Given the divide by zero seems to be occurring in one of the CR dlls, I don't have anyway of creating PDB files for the CR software.

We've done some more testing/debugging.

The report that is creating the error is a very simple single table report with 3 parameters. I can preview the report using the Main Report Preview in VS2010 and VS2013.  From the Main Report Preview in either VS2010 or VS2013, I can export the report to Excel.  However if I try to export to a PDF, I get the same error as above. The error seems to be occurring during the creation of the PDF.

Given the above, it sure looks some sort of a dll problem/conflict.

Any help anyone can give me to resolve this problem is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben Russell

Let's try this:

Do the export from the CR designer IDE. Do you get the error there?

Download SAP Crystal Reports 2013 (v. 14.1.x) from here:

SME Free Trials | SME Software | SAP

See if you can export from that.

Hi Ben,

Are you using SQLExpress as the report datasource or are you checking the project in/out which uses SQL Express as the database?

It could be a conflict in Team Foundation having both VS 2010 and 2013 on the same PC.

And check your Formulae, possible you have one or more that is generating an error because it's referencing a field that does not exist. Have you changed your data base since that report was created?

Verify the report in CR Designer also.

Hi Ludek,

Thanks guys for getting back to me and helping me solve this problem.

I don't see the link to V14.1 in your response and will try it.  And yes the export to a PDF from with in the CR Report IDE in either VS2010 or VS2013 errors out. However exporting to Excel works.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Don.

We are not using SQL Express and the report doesn't have formulas and has not been modified.  Yes Team Foundation is installed on the PC.  There are other reports that work.

As noted to Ludek, the export to PDF fails from CR IDE within VS2010 or VS2013.  Exporting to an Excel file works in both versions.

On the eval page it just says Crystal Reports. Here is the direct link:

Hi Don,

I'm using VS 2010 Premium and VS 2013 Premium if that makes any difference.

I have this solution and projects as local solution not under TFS and under TFS.  For all versions, I can view the report from CR IDE within VS.  Exporting to Excel works and exporting to a PDF does not for all versions.

Hi Ludek,

I'll give 14.x a try today.

Hi Ludek,

I checked out the link and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like it is for the stand alone version of CR for which you have to purchase a license for.

I really need to solve this problem with exporting to a PDF using the current version for CR for VS. It has to work in VS 2010 and VS 2013 as I have multiple solutions I'm upgrading from VS 2010 Premium to VS 2013 Premium.

According to this thread what I'm trying to do should work:

The link is for an eval of CR. Couple of reasons I want you to test it in CR 2013:

1) We have to see if this works in a stand-alone designer before moving to an app

2) From your description, the report does not work in the CR designer in .NET IDE. This designer is not as fully featured or as "stable" as the CR standalone.

These are normal troubleshooting steps.

If this is a critical issue, you can create a phone incident here:

Crystal Single Case Technical Support - SAP Business Objects US Online Store | SAP Online Store

But note that the 1st thing they will ask (at least they should ask) is if this works in a stand-alone designer.

Hi Ludek,

Ok I'll download and install the trial version and give it a try. Just to be specific, in the VS IDE (2010 and 2013) the designer is working fine and I can preview any of my reports.  I can export to Excel from the preview but not export to a PDF for certain reports.  There are reports that I can export to a PDF that are included in the same solution project.

Thanks for all of your help,

Ben

Hi Ludek,

As requested I've installed the evaluation copy for CR 14.x.  I ran the same report in CR 14.x and did a Print Preview.  The report displays correctly in the Preview tab.  I then tried to export to PDF and I get a pop up indicating "Crystal Reports has stopped working".  I was able to successfully export the report to an Excel file.

I also tried the same report in VS 2013 and got the same error.

So we have the same behavior with the stand alone versions and the VS version.

Suggestions on where we go from here?

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Ben,

Can you attached the report. I would like to look at it and see what the cause may be?

Use the Advanced editor, rename the rpt file to *.txt and then attach it.

Also, try removing parts of the report, start with verifying all of the formula, use the X2 button. If there are any errors you must fix them. Delete any unused formula you are not using.

Divided by Zero is not allowed obviously, which indicates there is a problem with the report. CR Designer will not complain because it's a Design tool so it allows and can ignore errors when previewing. It will not correct or report all errors due to the nature of a Design tool until that bad formula or object is used.

The SDK on the other hand does not have this ability, on Open it loads all objects into the various collections and tries to validate them.

You should be able to get more details if you wrap every call in a Try/Catch block and messagebox the exception and/or inner exception.

Hi Don,

Where do I find the Advance edit option so I can send you the report file.

Over the last couple of days I've tried the following from the stand alone version CR 14.1.4.1327

I created a report with only a text field in the page header, details and page footer. Used the default font with is Aerial  No database connection.

I can preview but get the same error when I try to export to a PDF.

If by advanced editor you mean the one that allows you attach files.  I've attached the following

Hi Don and Ludek,

For the attachements:

  • Contractor - Copy.txt - doesn't work
  • Simple No Database -Copy.txt - doesn't export to a PDF.  Only "text" fields, Aerial font and no database access
  • ParasitFinal - Copy.txt - this report works

Given the "Simple No Database" report doesn't export to a PDF, I'm not sure what I go from here.  You can't get any simpler than this.  Which makes we wonder why any of the reports work.

Any suggestions on where we go from here.

Hi Ben,

Sorry been busy on cases. They are paid for so get priority....

So if you can't export a simple report to PDF this has got to be something in your environment.

Do you have Adobe Reader installed? Although that should not make any difference.

Export to Word, Word has an Adobe plug-in that allows you to export to PDF also. See if that works.

Not the same code base but might help debug the issue...

Try doing a repair install of CR and check the export options, make sure Adobe is checked on.

Be sure to install under local PC admin account so the installer has full rights to register COM dll's and update the registry...

Check your AV and firewall logs, could be they are blocking or have blocked something to cause this problem.

Hi Don,

V11.0.10 of Adobe Reader is installed and exporting to a PDF from Excel or Word works.  We are running Office 2013.

All installs/repairs are done with Admin rights. I did a repair install on the stand alone version.  Same results, I can't export to a PDF from the stand alone version.

On thought I had was to install the stand alone version on another developer's work station which doesn't have CR installed.  If I don't have the same problem on that work station, then I believe we can assume it's something in my environment.  Hopefully I'll be able to do it on Tuesday.

Before I contacted you, I had installed CRforVS_13_0_9.exe and ran into the problem.  I then installed CRforVS_13_0_13.exe. Not sure if that makes any difference or not.

The version of CR for VS2010 that I had installed and was working is 13.0.1.  Is this version compatible with VS2013?

What really bugs me is some of the reports will export to a PDF. Just weird.

Thanks for all of your help,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Can you download DebugDiag from Microsoft and set it to capture the crash on your exe or devenv.exe?

It may tell us where the problem is with more details. You don't have our PDB's and over 4 Gig for all of them so I can send just the ones the Analysis asks for but may not....

If you can zip up and attach either the dump file or the output I'll have a look at it also.

And to make sure there is no other CR products that may affect this go into Programs and Features and show me what you have installed:

Also look for Business Objects..

Hi Don,

A couple of updates

  • I spent the last couple of days installing an eval copy of CR 14 and CR 13 for VS on another workstation. VS 2013 was already installed and I got the latest solution and projects I've been working on.  I was able to create PDF files from the stand alone and from VS 2013 for the reports that are giving us the problems on my machine.  I believe that indicates that its my environment. Based on this, I'm going go on ahead and try and deploy to one of our development servers.  Which probably will not happen until early next week.
  • I downloaded DebugDiag and installed it.  I'm not familiar with the program.  What rule do you want me to create to try and catch the crash that is occurring in IIS Express or in the stand alone.

As requested here is what I have installed:

Thanks for all of your help,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I ran your report though my test app and nothing special in there... What may be the issue is CR for VS is version 13 but has some version 14.0 dll's

When you installed CR 2013 those versions are replaced with version 14.1 and likely causing the problem because you cannot have CR 2011, version 14.0 and CR 2013  version 14.1 on the same PC.

Try uninstalling CR 2013 and then you may have to do a repair install of CR for VS and see if that resolves the problem.

Hi Don,

Interesting... This is what I did a couple of days ago that worked on another developer's laptop which didn't have any version of CR installed:

- Installed CR 14.x and was able to successfully export to a PDF for the reports that I sent to you.  This includes the non database report.

- I then installed CR for VS 13.0.13.  VS 2013.

- I did a get latest to get my solution/projects from TFS.

- From VS 2013, I was able to design, preview and export the report(s) to a PDF.

- On this test machine, I was able to have both CR 13.0.13 and CR 14.x installed and everything seems to be working.

Today on my laptop, I plan on uninstalling CR 14.x and CR for VS 13.x.  After uninstalling, I'll do a full reboot and install CR for VS 13.0.30. I'll do another reboot after installing CR for VS.

I'll let you know how the results.

Hi Don,

Here is what I'm considering doing:

- For my VS 2013 migration of 2010 projects and supporting development, I'll install a VM, install VS 2013 and current CR for VS. This should isolate VS 2013 and CR from the other versions of VS and CR on my development laptop.

- For my VS 2010 applications.I'll re install CR for VS 2010. That way I can do any emergency maintenance before the migration to VS 2013.

We currently have CR 13.0.2 run time on our production Windows 2008 servers.

All of these apps reside on the same web server. Which run time version of CR should I have installed on our production servers that will support the reports created and maintained by VS 2010 and  created and maintained in VS 2013?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Sorry but you English is not quite clear on what you are asking?

CR for VS SP 2 is not supported in VS 2013. So you cannot have SP2 and SP 13 on the same PC.

SP 13 is supported in VS 2010.

It could very well be the install order you are doing as to why it worked on that other PC....

I just avoid having CR 2013 and CR for VS on the same image.

Hi Don,

I wanted to bring you up to date as to where I'm at.

I have installed CR for VS v 13.0.13 on my development environment and we have installed the 13.0.13 redistributable on one of our servers.

If you'll remember, I've upgrading several web applications from VS 2010 to VS 2013.

In my local development environment, I had some reports which would run and others that would not.  I finally resolved this issue by selecting "No printer" in Page Setup as some of the reports had a printer selected that did not exist.  Not sure if this a bug or not, but it sure was flustering trying to figure what the problems was.

Development server

- Installed version 13.0.13

- Tested VS 2010 apps against CR 13.0.13 and all of the reports worked which is great. Note that we did not make any changes to these apps or their reports.

We have deployed the VS 2013 app to this server and we are still having the following problems exporting to a PDF on the server:

- We are exporting the PDF via "Response" and browser tab/window is blank.

- The reports are taking minutes to run where they should take a few seconds.

- Any ideas as to where to start looking to resolve the problems on the server.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

SP 14 was just released, upgrade if you can...

If you use the Viewers Export button how long does it take to export to PDF?

If you open a report with Saved Data, export to RPT format first and then preview that repot and export.

What this will tell us is if there is something else interacting with the output or database connections.

Could be your AV software scanning everything the file system is saving to disk.

Did you update the RPT files themselves also?

What happens with a new report?

Don

Hi Don,

Thanks for getting back to me.  I was finally was able to trap the exception I'm getting when exporting:

Yes all of the reports have been modified to set the printer to "No Printer" in Page Setup.  This totally cleared up the problem I was having running the reports in my local VS 2013l development environment.

Ben

OK and what path is it looking for and/or what path are you setting in code?

What  I meant was export your report to RPT format and then try exporting that report to PDF.

Also, create a NEW report with no database and just a text object and see what happens

Do you still get the same error?

Don

Hi Don,

I'm exporting to Response as per below:

.ExportToHttpResponse(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, Response, True, FileName + ".pdf")

Also, I've tried different export format like Excel and Word and get the same error.

I'll create a non database report and give it a try.  However, local and server access the DB.

Hi Don,

I created a report which doesn't access the database and it displays on my local system and remote server.

I updated the report to access a table and field. The report display on my local system and doesn't display on the remote server with the same error we've been discussing.

I double checked to make sure the app on the remote server was accessing the correct db server. database and using the correct database user id and password.

The remote server OS is

windows server 2008r2 x64bit

I confirmed with the OS group that they installed CRforVS_redist_install_32bit_13_0_13 which is the 32 bit version.

Should they have installed the 64 bit version?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Did you set the project to x64 mode? If so then yes you need the 64 bit MSI otherwise no...

So it appears to be a the DB client cannot be found by CR. Search for crlogger in the top right corner and enable it. It's our database logging component. See what it shows you.

Do you have any other tool that you can verify the connection works?

Take CR out of the picture and create an OLEDB connection and a simple SQL and dump the data into a DataSet and see if that work:

using System.Data.OleDb;

string connString = "Provider=SQLNCLI10;Server=ServerNameOrIP;Database=xtreme;User ID=YourUSerName;Password=YourPassword";

System.Data.DataSet thisDataSet = new System.Data.DataSet();

string sqlString = @"SELECT top 10*  FROM  ""xtreme"".""dbo"".""Financials"" ""Financials""";

System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection oleConn = new System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(connString);
System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand cmd = oleConn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandText = sqlString;

System.Data.DataSet ds = new System.Data.DataSet();

OleDbDataAdapter oleAdapter = new OleDbDataAdapter(sqlString, oleConn);
DataTable dt1 = new DataTable("Financials");

oleAdapter.Fill(dt1);

ds.Tables.Add(dt1);
ds.WriteXml("c:\\Test.xml", XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema);

HI Ben,

Now that is interesting, CR always works. So if it fails in CRD it looks like you have problems with Adobe.

I heard of one other who had an issue exporting also and they fixed it by uninstalling ALL Adobe Products and re-installing them.

Check you AV software logs, it is possible it's blocking PDF file creation. PDF has been know to have trojans embedded in them so it is possible your AV software is killing the file which explains why CRD is crashing also.

Top corner of this page you see the Search Community, this will open up a new form and allow you to search for crlogger and it will return KBA's on how to enable it.

Hi Don,

There are not any Adobe products running on the remove server.  Below is what is installed on the server:

It looks like all of software is in place. We have checked the virus logs and there isn't anything in them that indicate they are preventing CR from accessing the DLL.

Suggestions on where we go from here.

Hi Don,

We've finally resolved all of our issues. The error "The system cannot find the specified path" was caused by the database server address containing a trailing blank. The passed value was

"x.y.z.gov ". Removing the trailing space resolved the problem.

Needless to say the error message was miss-leading. I don't know if the error was trapped by MS or Crystal.

Thanks for all of your help and we can consider it closed.

Very interesting, makes no sense with the error you were getting. I don't know who was passing it to you. Usually for log on issues it's the Server/Client generating the error and CR is simply passing through to you.

I've never seen CR generate that error for log on issues so it must be the Client generating it...

Glad to see you finally found the cause...
