UWL refresh taking a long time on landing

Hi experts,

We are running SAP Portal on Netweaver 7.4. When landing on an UWL page, new items take about 20 seconds to refresh. This is causing many managers to not notice new items on the list. Do you know why the UWL refresh is taking so long and how to improve the refresh time?

Hi Matti

I hope you are well and many thanks for using the SAP Discussion Forums .

In relation to your scenario you mentioned the following:

You are running SAP Portal on Netweaver 7.4. When landing on an UWL page, new items take about 20 seconds to refresh. This is causing many managers to not notice new items on the list. Do you know why the UWL refresh is taking so long and how to improve the refresh time?

Ok in relation to the description that you have provided above there are a few important points to highlight and consider.

Ok from the perspective of the UWL in terms of high level performance analysis there are a few important points to highlight. Essentially with the UWL as a service and it's performance there are some important factors which we need to bear in mind.

The first important point to highlight here is that with the UWL it takes 5mins for the tasks to load into the UWL Inbox by default (on initial logon) and this is completely normal behaviour.

Now in terms of the tasks from a more general perspective (not initial logon) loading slow we need to keep the following in mind. Th e UWL works using two Pull operations. Firstly tasks are pulled from the backend into the UWL cache and they are then pulled a second time from the cache into the UWL User Interface. Due to this architecture there is an inherent delay in the automatic refreshes of the UWL. There is no way, in the current architecture that the UWL can refresh instantaneously.

This is upon inital load as the cache must be built first upon logon so there will always be a delay

Also, you may want to take a look at our sizing guide that our colleagues colleagues in development support have written in relation to the UWL.

You will find this if you go to: You can find the document under this path:  www.service.sap.com/sizing > sizing guidelines ' SAP NetWeaver > UWL Sizing guide

** Other Helpful Notes **

SAP Note: 1689669 - Performance issues in the Universal Worklist when Using the BPEMConnector

So back to your original point "the UWL is taking 20 seconds to load" we have to revert back to the underlying operation mechanism of the UWL and how it is pulling/obtaining informational flow from several system setups.

- SAP Note: 1946648 - Display work items from UWL cache on user log on

** Parameter: Wait duration before calling providers on loading of UWL **

If you expect UWL to show the most up to date workitems as soon as the user arrives in the UWL without having to wait, then 0 must be informed in this parameter. In case a value other than 0 is defined for it, the information in the UWL Cache for the user will be shown before the time configured is reached, when the retrieval from the providers will be made.

With the UWL and any type of refresh value configurations it is about striking balance.

Kindly update me as per your findings.

Matti, there are already discussions on this and comparable topics, it depends on reasons of such behaviour, e.g.:

Generally you could also take a look to UWL FAQ - Business Process Expert - SCN Wiki
