BOBJ in multiple layers

Hi Experts,

Our client has a series of environments for development and Production including DEV to UAT to PROD. Our programme wishes to add some layers to this to support System Test and Integration Test.

We are being told by the client technical team that, unless we have Business Objects defined on separate physical servers, we cannot use the BO Promotion Management Tool (was known as Import Wizard) to correctly adjust various report environment variables such as BO Universe name.  This means that we incur an overhead to manually update each report to repoint to the correct Universe.

Has anyone come across this situation before and found a solution for it?

Yes and No.

If you want to do a system upgrade validation (Say, you want to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1) and do not want to touch existing landscape you need new physical or Virtual servers.

If it is only about change management of assets, for example, your developer wants to modify a universe in development environment but wants to make sure no other things are affected, you can make use of "Version Management" (earlier part of LCM - Life Cycle Management). You can save the versions of your reports, universes, et all and you can check-in and restore as you want.

it is not clear what you consider a problem and trying to find solution for ?

Are you doing report promotion from Dev to UAT to Prod and need to change report universes or universe connections ?
If so Overrides functionality of promotion management is what you need to use. see Admin guide for details.

p.s.

there is no such thing as report environment variable.
