DB12 causing DB crash

Hi All,

I am in a situation which is weird and generates no logs.

This is a R/3 4.0B db DB2 7 running on AIX system, on which when I run DB12, SAP and DB2 freezes.

There are no logs and the OS freezes. Ultimately, we have to reboot the server.

The only thing that was observed was that db2sync process causing high paging.

I was not able to get time for a fix, so thought of sharing with you all and your expert comments before taking this further.

Regards,

Hello Divyanshu,

If you have access to OS level, check AIX errpt report, see if there is any issue with IO or any hard disk failures.

Thanks Siddhesh,

I asked my OS team, all was fine and this issue was observed on 2 different physical servers.

Okay DB12 causing a freeze is unheard of! potentially there is something else involved and it could be a mere coincidence unless you can tell me that you are able to repeat the action and get the same result.

Did almost 10 times and same result .

Okay, what exactly do you do ? You start DB12 and it hangs ? if that's the case, time to get into debugging mode, before you start DB12, start debugging mode /h and take it from there.

Good idea.. let me debug this time.

Will update you once I get a slot for this.

Dont think it will help .

If DB12 is the issue , and DB2 and OS ( aix )  freezes nothing is returned back to SAP . Keep facing this from 8 version .

The only command that DB2   ( AIX ) that helps to atleast debung from DB level is

db2fodc -hang [ Dont know whether the command is available in 7 )

all the best .. please update the progress

Thanks ,

Manu

My OS team has some errors to share related to db2sync.

Let's see what it was.

okay, potentially you will come across the statements that is causing db2sync to get stuck.

It will be interesting to see these errors.

Well there was nothing and even the diaglog is of no use in this release.

I will raise this with SAP.

Hello,

I just wanted to share a very useful command that will query DB2 for memory utilization even if DB2 does not respond using normal db2 CLI commands. With this command you can confirm any suspicion regarding DB2 memory issues.

Run this:
db2pd -dbptnmem

Why you decided that OS freezes? What are you tried to do and couldn't that led you to the conclusion about OS hanging? Which tools have been used to see high paging for db2sync process? Which version of aix are you using?

Thanks Roman for the reply.

As soon as I execute DB12, in 5-6 seconds, my putty session freezes on which I open topas.

In that lil time, I see high paging for db2sync process.

AIX is 5.2.0.0

Can you upload screenshots with topas output during that time?

hmm... it sounds like a local desktop issue, can you replicate it from someone else's machine ?

... not it's not a local desktop issue.

We have tried this from many machines running on different flavors of windows/GUI.

Here is, the DB went down without high paging this time.

Not sure  db2pd work on this version  .  If it does

Can you provide the following details

db2pd -version -osinfo

And after you run db12 please get an application snapshot

db2 "get snapshot for database manager"

Thanks ,

Manu

No db2pd - and the system freezes, even the OS, so no output for snapshot of DBM.

Hi Diyanshu ,

Try the following ,

db2fodc -hang

Most probably need to involve  IBM if you still having a valid contract

Thanks ,
