Difference between universe creation in IDT and Power Designer

We can generate a universe in power designer from a physical model and also in IDT. So my question is when we will go with IDT and when we will go with Power designer. What are the basic things we can do in IDT for universe creation but not in Power designer.

Power Designers one advantage is it creates universes with your database column descriptions as dimension description. But it's not useful at all. Because if you add new objects to your universe (over UDT or IDT) you have to define their descriptions manually. And if you regenerate your universe from Power Designer it will overwrite the old one. So you will loose all your manually created objects, joins, derived tables etc..

What do you mean by Power designer? In BO client there are two applications to create universe.

Universe designer and Information Designer tool (IDT)

Main advantage of IDT is that you can create universe based on the multiple sources.

With IDT you can create universe on SAP BW DSO,Cube and get the  data in the tables format.

Hi Amit, thanks for your reply..

SAP PowerDesigner – a powerful modeling tool for data, information, and enterprise architectures.Where we can design physical model and can generate universe.

How ever my question is we can use IDT to generate universe but on which scenario we will go for SAP Powerdesigner..

What are the basic difference between these tool for universe creation..

I would never use PowerDesigner for building a universe.

While it may be able to generate a universe, it cannot complete one - it's simply not the right tool for the job.

Use IDT for a multisource universe and UDT for a single-source universe.

Typically you would use UDT over a well-designed data warehouse and IDT to point at multiple database sources when there is no need for trend reporting and no data warehouse/data mart present.

Thanks Mark,

As we know SAP Power designer is a solid tool for data modeling. When we are generating universe in power designer it is obvious that we have to do some modification in business layer,Isn't also true that it will also reduce our lot of headache of creating data foundation layer.

Ok if some fantrap, chasmtrap or any loop is there in our physical model we will modify in IDT.

Does it make  any sense to use power designer or we still prefer Universe creation in IDT over Powerdesigner.

Power Designer simply isn't badged as a universe design tool. It's a tool that is a data modeller that can generate a universe. Generating is one thing, but you're a long way from a finished universe just by generating one. The universe should be fit to meet business reporting requirements, not to simply be generated from the power designer model. Data modelling and universe building are two distinct skills/disciplines which slightly overlap (i.e. knowledge of one helps with the other) but don't ever mix the two up.

If you've built a model on a single database, go for UDT  If it's multisource, then IDT
