PB11.2 and Oracle 11.2 client

We noticed that a number of our users' PCs have only the Oracle 11.2 client installed instead of the 10.2 client. The application is built using PB11.2 and it loads PBO10110.DLL when it runs. The DLL is the Oracle 10g driver. The database is Oracle 11.1.0.6.

This all came to light because a particular user had intermittent database problems, and the only thing that stood out was a mismatch between the PB driver and the Oracle client.

Are we playing with fire here with all the mismatches?

Hi Larry;

  Normally, you should be OK with a higher level client. The PB client (PBO10nnn.DLL) is really only an "interface" to the real DBMS vendor client software.

  The only handicap will be that the PB interface will only support O10g feature set. Thus, any O11g features you try & use will probably fail.

  In theory, you are playing a little on the riskier side as the PB Interface, DB Client & Server should be at the same level to be better aligned. Its like driving with a mismatched set of tires though. You can do it, but you may notice some handling anomalies.

  My suggestion would be to drop the user with the DB issues back to an O10g client and see if that helps. The other thing would be to let us know exactly what the user's DB issue(s) were.

Hey, Chris. We tried dropping one use back with no change. Our network guys said 'No way!' to downgrading all of the users. But it looks like we may have been barking up the wrong tree.

At least that eliminates one aspect.

To continue, it would be really helpful to let us know exactly what issues the one problematic user is having.

No real fire.  Officially PB 11 doesn't support Oracle 11, but it should continue to work fine.  I'm not having issues with 12g databases.

The only "fire" is that your client is running an Oracle version that is no longer supported.  11.1 was desupported in 2012.

You'll have to give more information about what issues your 11.2 Oracle client users are experiencing.
