Java issues in PPM 6.0

Hi, guys!

We are having an issue with Java applications in PPM 6.0 such as "Portfolio structure" in Portfolio management and Gantt diagram (Jnet/JGantt) in cProjects. When we open the application Java starts to load (loading circle image pops out) but nothing happens (sometimes the application loads in 30 minutes, sometimes the application never loads). Internet Explorer page usually freezes as well (depends on the user).

This problem occurred only after using PPM 6.0 after couple of months. We didn't have any issues with PPM 6.0 Java at first.

We are using:

CPRXRPM, Version 600_740, SP 0007

SAP_BASIS, Version 740, SP 0011

SAP_ABA (NetWeaver), Version 740 SP 0010

SAP GUI 740 (Patch level 4, tried previous patches as well)

SAP NWBC for Desktop 5.0 (we are using SAP NWBC for HTML as well)

Windows 7, SP1, 64-bit (tried Windows 10 with Edge browser)

Internet Explorer 11, Version 11.0.22 (64- bit)

Java, Version 8, Update 60 (64- and 32- bit)

We tried: 1. Java: clearing Java cash ("Keep temporary files on computer" option is on). Using previous Java version (1.6).

2. Internet Explorer: changing security (to low) and parameter settings of IE.

3. Launching PPM on different local machines in different local networks with different virus scanners.

Additional information: We have another system with PPM 5.0 running on Enterprise Portal - we have no problems using Java apps in this system. Opening Java debugger shows some kind of loop but we are not good enough in Java to understand the reasons of loop. We opened WDP application alone without NWBC and still experince the same issue.

We will appreciate any help.

Dear Oleg,

viewing your java log, I see you got some access control issues too.

Assure you got access to the mime repository objects you are requesting.

I also confirm with the recommendation from Hans-Peter regarding the SAP notes mentioned in his post.

I had this situation in one  of my projects too.

Have fun

Thank you guys for helping me ^)

I tried Chrome version 28.0.1500.71 and it doesn’t work too (the same behavior as IE).

About Java log - yes, it is processing "very slow" especially in the section Hans-Peter posted.

I installed everything from note 1926137 on PPM 6.0 and it didn’t help. I don’t want to risk updating PPM 5.0 Java (using note 1926137) because now we often use this system as a demonstration stand for our potential clients (showing Gantt diagram is rather important for project management presentations).

Maybe it's time to send a message in SAP.

Hi Oleg,

please have a look to the following:

- Look to your LAN-Settings on your client and verify, that "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" for protocol TCP/IPv4 is deactivated! (Advanced => tab "WINS") Sometimes the DNS-Server seems to have problems with "standard" settings causing slow processing..

- otherwise please try to "reset your IE11 to standard" (internet options => tab "advanced") (with a PC reboot). This was another known issue I had with some customers.

Peter

Hans-Peter,

I've contacted my system administrator and he has assured me that "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" option is deactivated in our network settings.

I've also reseted IE to standard settings but nothing've changed. I doubt that the problem occurs on the browser side (with all three main browsers acting the same with PPM 6.0 Java).

I've searched for some info from SAP and have found several notes regarding slow Java processing and recommended Java settings:

I also found many troubleshooting guides from community:

I have given this information to our basis administrators. Hope they will be able to help us.

Good afternoon, Oleg.

We are facing the same probelm with trying to open Java content on PPM 6.1 sp5 with IE and also Chrome.

Did you find the solution to this problem?

Hi Kir Zu,

which JAVA version do you run? There have been a couple of month since the last post, so some new JAVA versions were released in the meantime.

I can confirm, that there were serious bugs with JAVA 1.8u60 to 1.8u77 (connection / certificate errors). I now run 1.8u92 and the GANTT-chart works quite well (fast and without errors until now). Be aware, that Google stopped (removed) support for NPAPI Plug-Ins like JRE in Chrome version > 42.

And don't forget to update your JNET engine.

Now i run the latest Java 1.8u91. And Jnet 1.1410.15153

I Will try to implement refered sap note 1926137 - New version of JNet/JGantt JAR files for WebDynpro/ABAP applications and will let you know of the results a bit later.

Hi Kir Zu,

try to go directly to Java 1.8u92

Oracle released Java 1.8u91 as a CPU (critical patch update) whereas 1.8u92 marks a PSU (patch set update), resolving a lots of bugs. 1.8u91 and 1.8u92 were released on the same day.

Hi Oleg,

can you post the content of the JAVA console?

You said you did a down-grade to JAVA 1.6 - as I understandd your entry message, the problem also persists in JAVA 1.6.?

Hi Oleg,

have you tried to open the PPM GANTT-Chart with another browser (like Chrome <= v42 or Firefox)?

If you can't test this out, please try to deactivate TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in IE11 (under "internet options">>"advanced") JAVA control panel (under tab security). Use TLS 1.0. only. There is some issue with TLS and IE11.

It seems there are some connection issues in the JAVA log =>

java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

You can also try to enhance your local java.policy file with additional permissons for your server-URL.

Do you have some JAVA-Log for the PPM 5.0 environment? As I understand with PPM 5.0 everything works like charm.

An additional question: When does the JAVA console appear - before the mentioned 30 minutes waiting or after?

br,

Peter

Hans-Peter,

As far as i know Chrome is not supported by PPM 6.0 (as of note 1826387). Firefox shows the same problem with Java (and i believe previous versions (<=42) of Chrome won't work as well).

I tried to deactivate TLS (1.1 and 1.2) in IE and Java (cleared the cash after) but it still didn't help.

"java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect" line is also in PPM 5.0 java log (and PPM 5.0 Java  works just fine), so I don't think this is the issue.

We put our site in Java exception site list (Security tab). I do not exactly understand what is java.policy file but I can assume you are talking about something like this https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/security/tour1/index.html? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Java console appears immediately after launching the application (e.g. Portfolio structure) and it's log ends after the application fully loads (after 30 minutes or so).

Java log from PPM 5.0 is in the attachment.

Hello Oleg,

I know that Chrome is not supported in a direct way but works quite well for me (until version <=42).

If the JAVA console appears immediately, so is there a point in time where the logging does nothing for 30 minutes? Or is the JAVA logging processed "very slow" especially the following section:

and so on.... this section loops for a time.

What I additionally see is, that you are on different JNET/JGANTT versions for PPM 5.0 and PPM 6.0.

PPM 6.0 => JNet 1.1409.15119

PPM 5.0 => JNet 1.1399.14293

You can try to update the JNET/JGANTT => http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1926137 on your PPM 5.0 Development System and test again. You can try updating also on your PPM 6.0 Dev-System, since there is no version history inside the SAP note, which version-number is the latest one.

Peter
